High Renaissance

1475-1525
The word Renaissance means re-birth. Italian artists of this time looked back to the past classical beauty of ancient Greek
Art. They wanted to re-ignite the achievements of the past and held the beauty of the human form and realism as their
highest ideal. During this time wealthy patrons and families, such as the Medici family, gave a lot of money to the
development of the Arts. Themes in artwork involved stories from the bible so that the church could educate the largely
illiterate community in images and pictures. The artists also created works about ancient Greek and Roman mythology as
this was one of their inspirations. It was a time of great flourishing and development in Art, Science, Philosophy, Literature
and Music.
New discoveries and ideas occurred in Art for the first time. Perspective was used in painting to show depth and scale.
Artists used mathematical principles to work out proportions and size relationships between one object and another.
People were astonished to see a picture look as if it was 3D as prior to this the paintings had looked quite flat.
As more became known about anatomy, artists created ever more complicated images of the human body and showed
contrapposto, a complicated twist in the torso, to create drama and beauty in their works. Artists learned how to
foreshorten objects and anatomy in artworks so that the length and angle of something looked exactly how it appeared
to the artists eyes as they saw it. Leonardo Da Vinci mastered the use of sfumato where the edges of objects were softly
blurred and hazed so that they seemed to gently blend from one thing to another. Chiaroscuro was also developed
during this time as artists created great drama with the use of highly contrasting lights and darks.
