Skill Theme – Catching a Ball
Children will learn how to
Develop hand eye coordination
Learn how to balance
Understand the weight and force needed to throw and
catch a ball
18 day skill theme – catching a ball
Day 1- Identifying large and fine motor skills included with throwing
and catching a ball
Day 2- Balancing on and off from one knee or foot to the next
Day 3- Throwing the ball from one class mate to the next , playing
catch back and forth
Day 4- Walking back and forth dribbling the ball in a straight line
Day 5 – Step, kneel on one knee, dribble ball and repeat across the
black top
Day 6- Set up different targets or hoops for children to practice
throwing skills
Day 7- create a different pattern of dribble as the child walks
Day 8- Increase the steps of children walking back and forth as they
dribble the ball
Day 9- Create a larger distance between the children and the hoops
18 day skill theme – catching a ball
Day 10- Freely walk and throw the ball using inside of hands
Day 11- With a partner pass ball back and forth while walking
Day 12- Step, step, jump skill building practice pattern
Day 13-With a partner pass ball back and forth while running
Day 14- Pass ball back and forth from child to child
Day 15 – Set-up 4 cones in straight line. Have children practice
throwing and catching
Day 16- continue passing back and forth, designate one child to
shoot ball into the goal
Day 17- While walking pass the ball back and forth between 3
people
Day 18- As a team have children pass the ball back and forth
practicing the skills together over 18 day period
Movement wheel- catching a ball
Manipulative- Throwing (large area of open space),
Catching, dribbling
Non- manipulative- Transferring weight, balancing,
bending, twisting, stretching (practicing solo at their
own pace)
Locomotors- Walking, dodging , chasing (identifying
and practicing space and distance)
Successful learning environment
Be open to new ideas- allow positive feedback between
students and teachers
Be creative with the curriculum- mix learning
techniques up, make class fun
Practice and be patient with hands on learning
interactions
Take the children's interests into consideration and
create lesson plans and activity's based upon these
interests
Discipline
Create and go over the classroom rules together, make
the children feel obligated to obey rules they helped
create
Acknowledge children who are being good listeners
and ready to learn
Children need consistency- make sure no favoritism is
taking place
Talk to the child alone if they need re-direction the
less distraction in the class the better
Be sure to keep the children's attention- Clapping, or
create a form of saying
Observation
Running records – Observes child's behavior in certain
situations and interactions
