INTRODUCTION
Nmm
Digestive system is a
system by which
ingested food is acted
upon by physical and
chemical means to
provide the body with
absorbable nutrients &
to excrete waste material.
STEPS INVOLVED IN DIGESTION
INGESTION
COMPONENTS OF HUMAN
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
 It consists of the ALIMENTARY CANAL(Gastro-Intestinal
Tract) & associated glands.
 Alimentary canal is a long tube of 9m ,consists various
organs:
i. Mouth
ii. Buccal Cavity
iii. Esophagus
iv. Stomach
v. Small intestine
vi. Large intestine
 Associated glands are-Salivary glands, Liver & Pancreas.
MOUTH
 Upper most opening of Human
Digestive Tract.

 Bounded by labia.

 Guides passage for ingestion of food

& leads to buccal cavity.

 Salivary glands present produces

saliva(help in chemical digestion)
BUCCAL CAVITY
 Also known as oral cavity.

 Formed by cheeks, hard & soft palates and tongue.

o PALATE: roof of buccal cavity
o TONGUE: present on the floor of buccal cavity
o TEETH: hard structure in the buccal cavity

 Teeth help in physical digestion.

ESOPHAGUS
 Long & muscular tube of about 25
cm.

 Known as gullet or food pipe.

 Secretes mucus.

 Contain muscles which can contract

or expand alternately.

 Conveys chewed food from mouth to

stomach through peristaltic
movement.
STOMACH
 Small J-shaped organ.

 Glands present in it secrete gastric

juices( HCl, Pepsin, Mucus).

 Pepsin helps in the digestion of

proteins.

 HCl makes the medium acidic ,

activate the pepsin & kills the bacteria
present in the food.

 Mucus protect the stomach wall form

its own secretion of HCl.
SMALL INTESTINE
 Largest part of alimentary
canal, of about6.5m.

 Contains finger like

projections called villi
which increases surface area.

 Divided into 3 parts-

duodenum, jejunum &
ileum.

 Main region for the

absorption of food.
LARGE INTESTINE
 Differentiated into 4 parts :
caecum ,colon , rectum &
anus.

 Absorb water from the

waste leftover material.

 All leftover waste is stored

in the rectum.

 When full, faeces passes

out through the anus.
MAJOR DIGESTIVE ENZYMES
ENZYME PRODUCED IN SITE OF RELEASE

Carbohydrate
Digestion:
1. Salivary amylase Salivary Glands Mouth
2. Pancreatic amylase Pancreas Small intestine

3. Maltase Small intestine Small intestine

Protein Digestion:
1. Pepsin Gastric glands Stomach

2.Trypsin Pancreas Small intestine

3. Peptidases Small intestine Small intestine

Fat Digestion:
1. Lipase Pancreas Small intestine
PROCESS OF DIGESTION
FACT
80% of our immune system is located in
our digestive tract, making a healthy a
gut a major focal point if we want to
achieve optimal health
