St. Martin de Porres was born on December 9th, 1579 in
Lima, Peru. He was born to a Spanish man and either a freed slave from Africa or a Native American woman. At a young age, St. Martin de Porres’ father left his mother, sister and him in deep poverty. St. Martin de Porres was pulled out of primary school and was instead taught by a barber/surgeon to learn about medicine and how to cut hair. Early Life
Due to his mixed race, St. Martin de
Porres was treated poor by not only the people around him but also the government. At the time, it was the law of Peru that people of native or African descent could not join religious orders. St. Martin de Porres, who wanted to join the religious life, was able to join the community by starting out volunteering at the monastery, doing the most tedious of tasks. In exchange for doing these tasks, he was allowed to wear a habit and live in the community. Religious Life
At the age of 15, St. Martin de Porres
joined the Dominican Covenant of the Rosery in Lima. He started out as a servant boy but would soon become the church officer who distributed money to the poor. At the age of 24, St. Martin de Porres finally joined the Dominican lay Brothers and was put in charge of the infirmary. This is where St. Martin de Porres would become known for the infinite amount of care he gave to everyone. Religious Life
St. Martin de Porres even gained the
power of bi-locating, meaning that he could be at two locations at once. However, St. Martin de Porres became very ill and was put in a secluded section of the covenant. That did not stop him from trying to help others and he even snuck into the infirmary to help the patients. At his death, St. Martin de Porres became highly like among the people that knew him. Even though for most of his life he struggled with discrimination and poverty, he knew that there were people that had worst lives than him. This caused him to see the good in his life and help other that could not see that in theirs. St. Martin de Porres took the good in his life and used it to help those that could not find any good in theirs.
