RUBIK’S CUBE

Patterns with Algorithms

Prepared by:

High School
Mechanics of the Game:
 Participant must be a bonifide pupil/student of the school.
 Each school has one contestant per year level.
 Each participant will bring 3x3 rubik’s cubes.
 Elimination Round:
• Participants will undergo elimination round where they solve 3
patterns.
• Each rubik (unscrambled) will have one pattern. (See sample
patterns).
• The elimination may be done by group of desired participants (3, 4
or depends on the facilitator).
• Each participant will use a timer to identify the time consumed in
solving the patterns. The participant will be the one to start the
timer as the facilitator announces the go signal, and will be the
one to stop the time when the 3 patterns are solved.
• The less number of time to solve the patterns (may be top 3 or top
5, or as agreed) will be qualified for the final round.
 Final Round:
• 3 scrambled rubik’s cubes to be solved by each finalist.
Scrambling of rubiks will be done by the finalists making sure that
the finalist will not scramble his own rubik’s cubes.
• Start time – same procedure in the elimination round.
• Top 3 fastest solvers will be declared first, second, and third.

Corner pieces are in place,

oriented the correct way,
but the edges are shifted to
the adjacent face to form
this nice-looking design.

Cubing Terminology
Abbreviations and Commonly
Used Expressions
F2L stands for First 2 Layers.
OLL stands for Orientation of the Last Layer.

The Basics

A single letter by itself means to turn that face

clockwise 90 degrees.
A letter followed by an apostrophe means to turn that
face counterclockwise 90 degrees.
A letter with the number 2 after it means to turn that
face 180 degrees.

e.g. R U R’ U R U2 R’ U
Cubing Terminology
Abbreviations and Commonly Used Expressions

There is another commonly used notation where the uppercase mean a

clockwise and the lowercase means counterclockwise turns, but this is
not the official version because for other twisty puzzles the lowercase
letter means a different thing.
e.g. R U r U R U2 r U

Sometimes they mark the inverse rotations with the capital face initial
followed by a lowercase i
e.g. Fi means front inverted.

or the beginner’s method you just have to know the simple F (front), B
(back), R (right), L (left), D (down), U (up) turns but there are more
complicated moves for speedcubers which manipulate the middle layer
or two layers at the same time or reorient the whole cube.
