Loquat
The loquat is a large evergreen
flowering shrub or tree native to
the cool hill regions of China to
south-central China.

It is grown commercially for its

yellow fruit and as an ornamental
plant.
Loquat Tree
Loquats are
unusual among
fruit trees in
that the flowers
appear in the
autumn or early
winter and the
fruits are ripe at
any time from
early spring to
early summer.
Loquat fruits
grow in
clusters, are
oval,
rounded or
pear shaped
and yellow
to orange in
colour.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Loquat syrup is used for soothing the throat and for summer
colds.
Cuisine
In Chinese, the
loquat is called
“pi pa”

It is also the name

of a Chinese lute
which often
appeared in
poetry and prose.

This is probably
why the loquat is
used in the
scholars garden as
an ornamental
tree.
