WHAT IS GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING?

6
Geotechnical Engineering is defined as the science and practice of the part of civil
engineering that involves natural materials found close to the surface of the earth.
In a general sense, it includes the application of the fundamental principles of soil
mechanics and rock mechanics to foundation-design problems

What is Geology?

Geology is the study of earth –

Its rocks, minerals, soils, water,

And atmosphere. Geologists try
To understand the processes by
which these materials are formed
and constantly being changed.

Why study geology?

Geologic Time

Space

North America 515 million years ago

Scale

Complexity of Geologic Processes

Transformation of limestone into marble as a result of increased temperature

and pressure
Development of new ways of studying the earth
