DIRECT AND
ABSOLUTE INPUT
IN AUTOCAD 2017
Introduction
In AutoCAD, the default origin is located at the lower left corner of
the graphics area of the screen. AutoCAD uses the following
coordinates systems to locate a point in an XY plane:
o Absolute Coordinate System
o Direct Distance Entry
o Relative Coordinate System

In the absolute coordinate system the points are located with

respect to the origin (0,0).
The Direct Distance Entry you can draw a line by specifying the
length of the line and its direction by the use of this command. The
direction is determined by the position of the cursor, and the length
of the line that is entered from the keyboard. You can use Direct
Distance Entry with Polar Tracking (restricts cursor movement to
specified angles) and Polar Snapping (restricts cursor movement to
specified increments along a polar angle).
Direct Distance entry
technique
Specify a second point by first moving
the cursor to indicate direction and
then entering a distance.
Entering Coordinates with
Direct Distance Entry
A simplified method of entering
coordinates when the distance and
direction from the last point are known
is called Direct Distance Entry. In a
nutshell, Direct Distance Entry eliminates
the need for most keyboard entry of
coordinates. Direct Distance Entry can
be used anytime a command prompts
for a point.
To draw the figure above using Direct Distance Entry, first turn
on ORTHO (F8) or POLAR (F10). Next, begin the LINE command and
left-click a point in the drawing area.
Move your pointer to the right, type 6.5 and press ENTER.
Move your pointer straight up, type 2.5 and press ENTER.
Move your pointer to the right, type 3.0 and press ENTER.
Continue to move your pointer in the direction of the line to be drawn,
type in the length of the line and press ENTER.
Direct Distance Entry can be used
in many commands, including
Move, Copy and Stretch. Non-
orthogonal directions can be
indicated by setting the increment
angle in Polar Tracking.

Absolute coordinates ( Format :X, Y)

Type the X and Y coordinates to locate

the point on the current coordinate
system relative to the origin.
Absolute and Relative Coordinates
AutoCAD 2017 also allows us to use absolute
and relative coordinates to quickly construct
objects. Absolute coordinate values are
measured from the current coordinate system's
origin point. Relative coordinate values are
specified in relation to previous coordinates.
AutoCAD 2016 also allows us to use absolute
and relative coordinates to quickly construct
objects. Absolute coordinate values are
measured from the current coordinate system's
origin point. Relative coordinate values are
specified in relation to previous coordinates.
The coordinate display area can also be used as a toggle switch; each left
mouse-click will toggle the coordinate display on or off.
In AutoCAD 2017, the absolute coordinates and the relative coordinates
can be used in conjunction with the Cartesian and polar coordinate
systems. By default, AutoCAD expects us to enter values in absolute
Cartesian coordinates, distances measured from the current coordinate
system's origin point. We can switch to using the relative coordinates by
using the @ symbol. The @ symbol is used as the relative coordinates
specified, which means that we can specify the position of a point in
relation to the previous point.

coordinate technique
Conclusion
From this presentation we can conclude that the absolute
coordinates system are based on the UCS origin (0,0),
which is the intersection of the X and Y axes to locate this
command, click the location that you want to identify the
X,Y,Z coordinate values that are displayed at the
Command prompt, With object snaps turned on, you can
select an object and see the coordinates for a feature such
as an endpoint, midpoint, or center. While, with direct
distance entry, you can quickly specify a point relative to
the last point you entered. At any given point, you move
the cursor first to specify the direction, and then enter a
numeric distance on the specified drawing.
