INTRODUCTION
Many years after Indus valley civilization a new culture
developed in the plains of Indus and Saraswati rivers.
It is known as the Vedic culture.
The people who developed this culture called themselves
Aryans.
The word ‘Arya’ means ‘best’ or ‘cultured’.
VEDIC LITERATURE
Vedic literature is most ancient literature of the world.
It contains profound knowledge.
Language of the vedas is ancient Sanskrit.
Vedas are four in number- Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda
and Atharva Veda.
This is called ‘Shruti’ literature. ‘Shruti’ means that which is
heard.
RIG VEDIC OR EARLY VEDIC
PERIOD
During early Vedic period people lived in the region called
Saptasindhu.
Saptasindhu means seven rivers. The area was covered by the
river Indus and its tributaries.
Their main occupation was cattle rearing, growing wheat and
barley.
Important craftsmen were there who build chariots. The
Aryan women would spin and waive clothes.
SOCIETY
A village or township was inhabited by people of several
families.
People of several village are collectively called as ‘Jana’.
At that time there are several Janas like Purujana, Kurujana,
Yadujana etc.
RAJA AND WAR
The duty of Raja was to lead at the time of war, perform
Yajnas and maintain law and order.
The part of Raja was not hereditary.
Raja would occasionally get milk, ghee, cows, wheat, jewels
etc from Jana.
GODS, GODDESSES AND YAJNA
People used to perform Yajna to please Gods and Goddesses .
They would pray for Children’s happiness, cows, houses,
freedom from disease and victory.
Their main Gods were Indra (rain), Agni (fire), Varun(sky),
Surya (Sun) etc.
LATER VEDIC PERIOD
The other three Vedas- Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda
were composed in this period.
In this period Vedic culture spread from Sindhu- Saraswati
region to the northern Gangetic plains.
Janapada was known as Kuru Janapada Panchal Janapada,
Sursen Janapada etc.
COMPOSITION OF THE EPIC
The two great epics of our country the Ramayana and the
Mahabharata were composed during this period.
Ramayana was created by Maharishi Valmiki, similarly,
Mahabharata was composed by Ved Vyas.
Both the epics are Foundation of Indian culture. These epics
have influenced the lives of people in all fields.
