THE FUNCTIONS OF
CONNECTIVE TISSUE

 Providing and maintaining form in

the body
 Provide a matrix that connect and

binds the cells and organs

 Give support to the body
DEVELOPMENT OF THE
CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Primitive
 Mesoderm  migrate Mesenchyme
from their site of origin,
surrounding and
penetrating developing
organs Mesenchyme
(Mesenchymal cells:
characterized by oval
nucleus with prominent
nucleoli and fine
chromatin)
3 COMPONENTS OF
CONNECTIVE TISSUE

 Cells
 Fibers

 Ground Substance

FIBERS OF CONNECTIVE
TISSUE:

 Collagen
 Reticular

 Elastic
GROUND SUBSTANCE

 Consist of : - glycoproteins
- proteoglycans
 Colorless and transparant.
 Fills the space between cells and fibers.
TYPES OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE
LOOSE CONNECTIVE TISSUE
 Support many structures that are normally
under pressure and low friction.
 Consist of all the main component of
connective tissue proper.
 The most numerous cells are fibroblasts and
macrophages, but all the other types of
connective tissue cells are also present.

2. Collagenous fiber

DENSE CONNECTIVE TISSUE

 Consist of the same components found in loose

connective tissue, but there are fewer cells and
clear predominant of collagen fibers.
 Less flexible and far more resistant to stress
 There are dense irregular and regular

ELASTIC TISSUE
 Compound of band less thick, parallel elastic
fibers.
 Occurs infrequently
 Present in the yellow ligaments of the vertebral
collumn and in the suspensory ligament of the
penis.
RETICULER TISSUE
 Consist of reticular fibers intimally associated
with specialized fibroblasts called reticular
cells.
 At the hematopoietic organs and lymphoid
organs.
MUCOUS TISSUE

 Found mainly in the umbilical cord

= Wharton’s Jelly
 Has an abundance of ground substance
composed chiefly of hyaluronic acid. It’s jelly
like tissue containing very few fibers.
 Also found in the pulp of young teeth.
