The most significant broadband
technologies include:
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
Fiber technologies
Coaxial cable
Wireless
Broadband over Power Lines (BPL)
Broadband can be provided by:

• Wired connections: Telephone, Cable

• Wireless: Satellite

The Newest in Internet Service is

Broadband over Power Lines
(or “Access Broadband”)
with some unique features . . .

What is BPL?

 BPL is a technique for sending

high speed data through the
medium voltage power distribution
network.
 It uses frequencies between 2 and
80 MHz

Major categories of BPL:
ACCESS BPL: A carrier system that sends
radio frequency energy on frequency energy
on frequencies between 1.705MHz and
80MHz over medium voltage lines or low
voltage lines to provide broadband
communications.
IN-HOUSE BPL: The products connect
directly with the low voltage electric lines
inside your home or office.

Components of BPL

 Couplers
 Nodes
 Injectors
 Repeaters
 Extractors

BROADBAND OVER POWER
LINES SERVICES:

 Supports any application that is

compatible with the internet.
 Supply consumers broadband and
Internet telephony services.
 Mature and cost-effective
 Demand for high speed internet
connections
 Increased data transmission speed
COST:
Cost per home passed and estimated cost per subscriber include:
•Cost of equipment & installation.
•Cost over time.
•Maintenance and upgrade.

The life cycle of telecommunication equipment is

about eight years where as the life cycle of BPL
equipment is expected to be 10-15 years.
THE DIFFERENTIATING
FEATURES OF BPL:

Aiming at
Lower monthly costs
High speed(1-3Mbps)
Always on service
Balanced upload and download speed
Advantages
Economical
Reduced complexity of cables

Power management
Improved Energy management
Injection intelligence

Dynamic monitoring
Provide all utilities in single cable

Problems
Attenuation
At longer distribution feeders
At distribution transformers
Signal must be amplified in less than
every mile.
Overhead power lines & residual wiring
act as antennas & radiate energy.
Potentially harmful radio frequency
interference.

Conclusion
Power line infrastructure has many
attributes that fit perfectly with
providing a telecommunications channel.
Advances in inductive coupling techniques
and advanced signal processing have made
the vision of robust IP services using BPL
technology a reality.
BPL provisioning does not come without
the additional infrastructure costs for
injectors, repeaters, extractors
