Engineering Design I

Lesson 1
Drawings Overview
2

Objectives
• Describe the role of drawings in the design
process.
• Contrast concurrent versus traditional
design processes.
• List five professions that use technical
drawings.
• Describe some drawing creation
techniques.
• Explain why standards are important.
• Identify uses of the graphic language.
3

Describe This....
• Using only words, try to describe this:

• How effective is this approach?

4

Drawings = Universal Language

• A proper
drawing can
quickly, and
effectively
completely
describe an
object
5

Engineering Graphics
• What is “Engineering Graphics”?
– A set of rules and guidelines that help you
create an Engineering Drawing.

• What is an “Engineering Drawing”?

– A drawing that communicates an idea or
design.
6

Engineering Graphics
Examples of Engineering Drawings:
• Mechanical Engineers:
– Detailed drawing of a part that needs to be
machined.
• Electrical Engineers:
– A circuit schematic.
– Circuit board layout.
• Civil Engineers:
– Plans for a bridge.
7

Uses of Engineering Drawings

•To communicate
Information:
–Shape
–Materials
–Dimensions/Size
–Assembly sequence
–Quantities required
–Authorship/Ownership
–Owners Manuals
8
9

Uses of Engineering Drawings

To Enhance Accuracy:
•Tolerances
•Appearance or Configuration
•Finish Requirements
•Special Process information
•Proof of Review and Approval
•Control of Changes
•Tracking of various Versions or
Configurations
10
11

Uses of Engineering Drawings

To Enable Clear Interpretation:
•Picture Versus Words
•Hidden or Special Features
•Drawings are more universal than
Languages or Written words
•Foreign Manufacturing
•Purchasing Requirements
•Advertising and Marketing
12
13

Uses of Engineering Drawings

•Customers:
–To Assemble the product
–To order repair parts
–To evaluate potential
purchases
–To learn how to operate
the product
14

Who uses Engineering Drawings?

•Sales
–To convince Purchasers to
buy the product
•Manufacturing
–To order materials
–To prepare materials
–To manufacture and
assemble
–To create work instructions
–To create inspection
instructions
15

Who uses Engineering Drawings?

•Management
–To evaluate designs
–To minimize Liability
–To evaluate proposed
changes/updates
–To determine First Costs
•Quality Assurance
–To inspect for Conformance
–To develop Inspection Plans
16

Who Makes Engineering Drawings?

•Traditionally?
–Trained Draftspersons
•Currently……..
–Designers, Engineers, Technologists will create
drawings on CAD stations or paper
–In most Companies the computer file is the
PERMANENT record of the drawing.
–Some keep paper copies, or microfilm as well.
(But the paper copy is not always current)
17

Manual Drafting
• Slow
• Difficult to edit/revise
18

Computer Aided Design/Drafting

• CAD
• Parametric
• Quick/easy
edits/revisions
• Electronic
information
can be ported
to other
applications
19

Drafting Standards
• International Standards Organization (ISO)
• The American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME)
• American National Standards Institute
(ANSI)
• Canadian Standards Association (CSA)
20

Sketching
•Why Sketch?
–Communicate Ideas from the shop floor
–Customer site visits
–Coffee Shop or Dinner Meetings with Clients
•The Importance of a good Sketch.
–Clearly defines what is required
–Can be used at all levels for all purposes
–Can be used for production in time crunch
–Makes everyone’s life easier and productive
