Introduction
• How walls fails during earthquake-
I. Diagonal tension crack
II. Shear sliding occur
Introduction

Why retrofitting is required-

• Improves energy dissipation property
• Displacement recovery
• Minimise damage at bottom
SMA Tension Brace
• Nickel-titanium alloy is used.
• It recover 98% deformation up to 6% strain
• Also provide 7% damping
Model
• 4 walls ,2 walls are retrofitted and remaining 2 are controlled

Model
• Reinforcement details-
• .18% in vertical direction
• .21 % in horizontal direction
• 1% vertical r/f in boundary zone
• .51% horizontal r/f in boundary zone

Conclusion
• SMA braces slightly shift the location of crack at
base.
• SMA distribute the stresses throughout the wall and
reduce shear damage.
• SMA increases lateral strength of wall.
• Energy dissipation property is increased by SMA
brace.
• Walls can recover more than 50% deformation.
