UPDATES ON PEDIATRIC NUTRITION:
FOCUS ON ZINC
ZINC
Functions of Zinc
 Growth
 Immunity
 Reproduction
Sources:
 breastmilk
 Milk formula
 Animal sources ( oyster and mackerel )
 Plant sources
RESEARCHES SHOWED THAT:
 Zinc supplementation is very much needed
during growth and development
 Zinc supplementation during colds can shorten
the duration of colds or reduce 1 day of cold
sufferring
 Zinc can reduce 40% of occurrence of colds
 Zinc can reduce 31% occurrence of otitis media
 Zn supp in mental and psychomotor
development - NO EFFECT

NUTRICOSMETICS: What is true and what is not?
NUTRICOSMETICS

 Is it a valuable concept or a new marketing

twist?
 Nutraceuticals and Cosmetics

 Antioxidants and EFA’s

 Reactive Oxygen Species ( ROS ) – free radicals

ANTIOXIDANTS
 Vit.A : Retinol is better than Tretinoin, a topical Vit. A
 Vit B3 – a good depigmenting substance
 Vit C : Use moisturizers with Vit C, it can add protection
from UV and can treat wrinkles
 Vit E – can increase UV protection 4X
 Glutathione – The use of IV was ban in May 2011
 Green tea extract – very good
 Gingko biloba – good in wound healing
 Aloe vera – not a topical recommendation for hair
regrowth

EARLY FLAVOR LEARNING AND ITS IMPACT ON
LATER FEEDING BEHAVIOR
FINDINGS OF THE STUDY REVEALS THAT:

 Low birthweight babies are associated with high

salt intake during pregnancy
 Experiences of different flavors of the mother
heightened infants preferences after birth
 Human milk flavor depends on maternal intake
and also influence the food preference of the
infant
 Breastfed infants are less picky, prefer fruits and
vegetables and has varied sensory experience

CLINICAL NUTRITION:
DIRECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE
FUTURE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS

 Early vs Late Parenteral Nutrition in Critically Ill

Patients (CIP)
 Role of Specialized Nutrients in CIP

 Immunonutrition in the problem of Inflammation

 Parenteral Fish Oil Lipid Emulsion in CIP

 Use of Energy Drinks to Increase Taurine Level in

CIP

FOOD RESEARCH: DIRECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE
RESEARCH THRUST OF FOOD SCIENCE AND
NUTRITION RESEARCH
1. Food Security – food adequacy and quality
2. Food safety – avoidance of foodborne illnesses
 How do we inactivate the organism affecting
quality of food?
 Which microorganism should be targeted?
 Which physiological state of the organism should
be targeted?
 How do processors make sure that the nutritional
and sensory qualities are not affected?
3. Food defense – assurance that illnesses will
not result from consuming foods due to
hazards that are intentionally introduced to
them.
e.g. melamine
agricultural terrorism of crops, livestock and
food processing operations
FOODS

ENGR. ROSEMARIE GARCIA

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT OF SOME
NUTRITIONAL COMPONENTS
USE OF SOME FOOD PROCESSING WASTE
 Orange peel – source of sugar for Tropicana
products
 Overripe tomatoes – processed as a source of
lycopene
 Scraps of crabs and shrimp – source of chitosan,
food thickener
 Potato peel – source of phenolics
 Banana peel and mango peel
 “sapal” – fiber, oil, flour

TREATMENT SARCOPENIA
UPDATES ON NUTRITION MANAGEMENT FOR
CANCER
 Assessment
 Intervention- avoiding cachexia and sarcopenia

 Enteral mode

 Parenteral mode

 Increase fats during weight loss

 Omega -3 fatty acids – anti–tumor effect

 Use of glutamine supplementation

POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

 inhibition of carcinogenesis and cancer growth

 inhibition of proteolytic –inducing factor and
lipid mobilizing factor
 preservation of lean body mass
 decreased in fatigue and improved quality life
 decreased inflammatory cytokine production
 increased efficacy of chemo-radiotherapy and
 reduction in the effects of chemo-radiotherapy.

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION RESEARCH

CORAZON VC. BARBA, PhD
The 2013 Lancet Series on Maternal and
Child Nutrition indicated that 34 countries
account for 90% of the global burden of
malnutrition ( stunting). The Philippines is one
of them.
GLOBAL TARGET 2025
To alleviate or lower the incidence of the ff:
 Stunting
 Anemia
 Low birth weight
 Overweight
 Wasting
To increase the trend of Exclusive breastfeeding
(EBF) or increase mean duration of EBF
RESEARCH NEEDS
 Are our delivery platforms and strategies for
implementation of nutrition specific
interventions able to reach the population in
need?
 What mix of interventions to improve maternal
and child nutrition is most cost effective?
 What is the role of nutrition in adolescence, at
the time of conception and in pregnancy, in
fetal growth and development?

 Need for culinary cultural redemption – bringing
back the traditional ”kakanins” and heritage
dishes
 The right food for infants and elderly
 Managing the cost of food, time and space of
small families in condos and apartment dwellers
 Food packaging, the death of plastics?
 Is there a new RENI for Asian kids?

 Selfie diets

 Mass feeding frenzy
