Reliability

 Defined as the probability that a

component, devices, equipment, or system
will perform its intend function for a
specified period of time under a given set of
condition.[8]
 Relationship of Reliability to Design[8]
 Life cycle
 Conceptual Design
 Detailed Design and Development
 Manufacture, Constuction, or both
 Operation (SOP)
Design
 Classification of Machine Design[Khurmi R, S.
1993.”Text Book of Machine Design”. Eurasia Publishing House
(Pvt) LTD]
 Adaptive design, the designer only makes
modification in the existing designs of the
product.
 Development design, designer starts from the
existing design, but the final product may differ
quite markedly from the original product.
 New design. This type of design needs lot of
research, technical ability and creative
thingking.
Designing a Machine
Component
 Type of load and stress caused by the load.
 Motion of the parts or kinematics of the machine.
 Selection of materials.
 Form and size of the parts.
 Frictional resistance & lubrication.
 Economical features.
 Use of standard parts.
 Safety of operation.
 Workshop facilities.
 Number of machines to be manufactured.
 Cost construction.
 Assembling.
RELIABILITY CENTERED
MAINTENANCE
What is Reliability Centered Maintenance
(RCM)?
Answer:
The concept of developing a maintenance
scheme based on the reliability of the
various components of the system or
product. Implementing a preventive
maintenance program using RCM can
greatly reduce the cost of ownership of a
product or system.
RELIABILITY CENTERED
MAINTENANCE
 What is Reliability goals?
 Reliability Goals:
 Improve a design priority that provide
preventive maintenance.
 To get useful information in the design
improvement based on reliability.
 Generate PM related task that can
receive reliability based on a system.
 All goals above can achieve if the
maintenance total cost are minimum.
RELIABILITY CENTERED
MAINTENANCE
 RCM Principles:
 RCM is system/equipment focused.
 Safety and economics drive RCM.
 RCM is function-oriented.
 RCM is reliability centered (no
simple failure).
 An unsatisfactory condition is
defined as a failure by RCM.
 RCM task must be effective (Low
Cost).
 RCM uses a logic tree to screen
maintenance task (Consistency in
maintenance)
 RCM task must be applicable
(reduce occurrence the failure).
