INTRODUCTION

 Modeling of - Surface water, that is found in lakes,

rivers, streams, ponds, and other natural
watercourses. It is also found in marine bays,
estuaries, and oceans.

 Advection and dispersion in rivers

 Modeling of surface water stratification

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
 Develop a two-dimensional longitudinal/vertical
(laterally averaged) hydrodynamic and water
quality model.
 Calibrate and validate the model to various
hydrological, meteorological and water quality
parameters.
 Develop, run, and evaluate a variety of
modelling scenarios.

4
NEED OF STUDY

 Need of Hydrodynamic modelling

 Need of Water Quality modelling

 Need of study with regard to the impacts of

technology (Jacquet, J., Mathematical Modelling Of Water
Quality: Streams, Lakes and Reservoirs, Wiley-Interscience
Publication)

5
SCOPE OF WORK
 Collection of the data required.

 Preparation of model input data.

 Development of a two dimensional

vertical/longitudinal hydrodynamic and water
quality model for Godavari River Basin.

 Calibration and validation of hydrodynamic and

water quality W2 model for different
Hydrological, Meteorological and Water Quality
parameters of Upper Godavari Sub-basin.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Hydrodynamic Modelling
 Provides crucial information to sediment, toxic, and eutrophication
models including water velocities, circulation patterns, mixing and
dispersion, water temperature and density stratification.
Water Quality Modelling
 Predict or simulate receiving water quality resulting from
effluent/contaminant discharges or releases and/or non-point
sources for various types of receiving waters characteristics and
meteorological conditions.
 Possible to integrate all the temporal and spatial variables into the
water quality prediction

LITERATURE REVIEW
CE-QUAL-W2 Model:
 CE-QUAL-W2 is a 2-dimensional, laterally averaged,
hydrodynamic and water quality model for rivers, estuaries,
lakes, reservoirs and river basin systems.
 Developed by U.S Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterways
Experiment Station
 In CE-QUAL model applications,
 Hydrodynamic: Water surface elevations, velocities and
temperature, density
 Water Quality: Conservative tracer SS, Coliform bacteria, TDS
Labile-, Refractory-DOM Algae Labile-, Refractory-POM
Phosphorous, NH3, NOX- nitrogen, DO, pH, CBOD, CO2, HCO3,
CO3. Fe etc. (22 items)
