BASIC SENTENCE PATTERNS

PATTERN 1: Subject-Verb(SV)
 It is also a NOUN-VERB PATTERN (N-V)

For example:
People travels.

* Simple sentences represents what we call deep structure .


Verb used in this pattern are referred to as intransitive.
Intransitive verb is a verb that is not followed by a
complement of any kind.
 For some exercises identify the subject and the verb
used in a sentence.

1. Commuters ride everyday.


2. Airlines observe safety regulations.
3. Lino plays in the backyard.
PATTERN 2: Subject- Verb-Direct Object
(S-V-O)
 It most widely used in English. As basic structure.
 It is also known and expressed symbolically as N1 and N2
which means, the first noun which is the subject is different
from the second which is the object.

For Example:
Television provides entertainment.
Newspapers inform readers.
PATTERN 3: Subject-Verb-Indirect
Object- Direct Object (S-V-IO-DO)
 It uses a transitive verb and two objects. The first or the name
word that tells to whom or for whom the action is done comes
between the verb and the direct object, and kis called the
indirect object; the second is called the direct object. This
structure is also known as N1-V-N2-N3.

For Example:
Television provides viewers entertainment.
Newspapers bring readers current events.
 The symbol IO & DO(or N1 and N2)indicates that the
first and second object in this pattern refer to two
different persons or things.
Common verbs in this structure are:
awards buy paint show
bring give sell teach
PATTERN 4A: Subject-Linking Verb-
Complement ( S-LV-C(N) )
 It is also known as N-V-C.
 The complement may either be used an adjective which
tells something about the subject/noun that explains or
means the same person or thing as the subject.
 Thus, it may either be S-LV-C (N) or S-LV-C (A).
 Example:
Blue jeans are an international style
Its origin is the story of Adam and Eve.


PATTERN 4B: Subject-Linking Verb Adjective
Complement (S-LV-C (A) )
 In this pattern, the linking verb joins the subject with an adjective
that describes the subject. The complement is called a predicate
adjective.
Verbs that commonly appear in this pattern are:
Appear. Grow. Smell
Become prove. Sound
Feel. Remain taste
For example:
The pants were originally stiff and heavy.
Amorsolo was a foremost Filipibo artist.

• For clarification: Pattern 4A/ S-LV-C (N) is also known as N-LV-


N, while Pattern 4B, or S-LV-C(A) is also known as N-LV-A.
PATTERN 5: Subject-Verb-Object-
Objective Complement (S-V-O-OC)
 This pattern resembles pattern 3 in that it also has three nouns two of
which follow the verb and which have the same referent. It is also
known as the N1- V- N2-N2 structure.
 The object complement in each of the sentence is an adjective which
describes or makes a judgment about the object in the pattern.
For example: Electronics made the globe a village.
Listeners call radio the magic medium.
Most people consider the computer a great invention.
