GAS SYSTEM ON W34SG ENGINE

Gas Receiving Station

Gas Filtering Unit

• Pressure Regulated gas Received from GAIL skid through pipeline(at 5-5.5 kg/cm2).
• A Electro pneumatic shut off valve(Plant Emergency Shut off Valve ) is provided just
before the filtering unit. It’s 24 VDC Supply (from CFA 901) and Control air Supply Should
be always on.
• There are Two Filter Vessels (along with Isolation Valves) in filtering unit. One Should be
In Service and another One should be in Stand by position.
Gas Metering Unit
• The Filtered Gas is Supplied to the power plant through gas Metering Unit.
• The purpose of the flow metering unit is to Measure the volume of gas Supplied to the
power plant.
• A Filter and a Flow metre is installed in flow metering unit.
• A bypass line is provided to ensure the Continuous gas flow to the plant during
maintenance in Flow metering unit.

Compact Gas Ramp

• Natural gas from Gas Metering Station is supplied to Compact Gas

Ramp unit.
• It provide the correct gas admission to the engine by regulating gas
feed pressure depending on the engine load.
• Gas Compact ramp equipped with two main slam shut off valves,
installed in series. The valves are operated by Pressurized Control air.
• A leak test of the shut off valves Performs Prior to every engine start.
• Gas trapped between the valves and in the pipe between shut off valve
and the engine is vented to the atmosphere through the vent valve .
• Both the main slam shut off valve and the vent valves are Controlled by
PLC.
• A Pressure Transmitter is Provided after gas filter to Monitor the main
gas Pressure.(Gives Low Pressure alarm at 1.5 bar, High Pressure
alarm at 6.3 bar and Shuts down the Engine at 7.2 bar).

Gas Fuel System
Gas Admission System

• On the engine, the gas is led through a common pipe, via individual
feed pipes to each cylinder.
• A separate pipe system provides the pre‐chambers with gas.
• The gas inlet to the engine is controlled by the "Main Gas Admission
Valves" in the main charge system and by the "Prechamber Control
Valves" in the prechamber gas system.
• The main gas valves are direct actuated solenoid valves, controlled by
the engine control system and the prechamber valves are camshaft
controlled mechanical valves.
• The gas pressure must always remain higher than the charge air
pressure. There is a minimum and maximum offset for the pressure
difference. If the difference is outside the limits the engine will be shut
down.
• The main gas and the prechamber gas pressures can be Monitored
from WOIS and LDU.
Gas Admission System
Main Gas Admission valve
• The main gas admission valves performs the injection of gas into the
cylinders. The valve is located on the multiduct at the inlet channel.
• The main gas valve is a direct actuated solenoid valve. The valve
control i.e. the gas injection timing and duration is performed by engine
control system.
Injection & Ignition System

• The Wärtsilä 34SG is a spark ignited, gas-otto engine working

according to the lean burn concept.
• In a lean burn gas engine the mixture of air and fuel in the cylinder is
comprimized lean, i.e. there is more air than needed for combustion.
• In order to stabilize the ignition and the combustion of the lean mixture,
a richer fuel mixture starts the combustion through a prechamber.
• The ignition is initiated by a spark plug located in the prechamber,
giving a high-energy ignition source for the main fuel charge in the
cylinder.
• The prechamber is located in the center of the cylinder head.
