Enumerate and describe the parts of the
brainstem
A. Medulla Oblongata
 Continuous caudally with the SPINAL CORD at the
FORAMEN MAGNUM and is continuous with PONS
B. Pons
 Located b/w the MEDULLA and MIDBRAIN
C. Midbrain
 Part of the brainstem located b/w the PONS and
DIENCEPHALONn & is traversed by the CEREBRAL
AQUEDUCT
Describe the three part of the brainstem,
namely:
A. Tectum
 Roof of the MIDBRAIN
B. Tegmentum
 Located anterior to the VENTRICULAR CANAL
C. Crura Cerebri
 Forms the bone of the midbrain and contains
CORTICOSPINAL & CORTICOPONTINE TRACT
Describe the classifction of the motor
neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord
 GENERAL SOMATIC EFFERENT - if effector is a
skeletal muscle of MYOTOMIC ORIGIN
 SPECIAL VISCERAL EFFERENT – if effector is a
skeletal muscle of BRACHIOMIC ORIGIN
 GENERAL VISCERAL EFFERENT – if the effector is
smooth muscle, gland or cardiac muscle
