WHAT IS RUBBER MOLDING?
• It is simultaneous process of shaping &
vulcanization/curing of rubber compound in
closed mould cavity under application of heat
& pressure.
• Steps Involved In Rubber Product Manufacturing
TYPES OF MOULDING
• Compression Moulding

• Transfer Moulding
TYPES OF MOULDING(cont.)
• Injection Moulding
COMPRESSION MOULDING

• Types of moulds
1. Flash mould
2. Semi-positive mould
3. Fully positive mould

• Types Of Presses
1. Hand Press
2. Hydraulic Press
3. Toggle Press
4. Shoe & boot presses
5. Steam vessel presses
6. Autoclave presses
7. Presses for conveyor belts
& V-belts
COMPRESSION MOULDING OPERATION:

1. Mould fixed into the press

2. Mould temp. maintained at curing temp
3. Blank Preparation: compound of accurate
weight & shape (sheet/extruded/pieces)
4. Blank heating: To keep moulding cycle at min.
& for thick articles using oven, water bath or
microwave oven.
MOULDING OPERATION(cont.)
• Moulding cycle: Upper platen

1. Mould position: Open

2. Spraying of mould release agent
3. Loading of compound Guide pins

4. Bumping Mould cavity

5. Mould closed
6. Vulcanization/curing
7. Mould opened
8. Product removed Lower platen

1. Mould position: Open

Defects & Remedies
Defect & Reason Remedy
• Undercure: Improper  Check heaters, redesign
heating, very thick compound formulation
article
• Overcure: Improper  Check heaters, proper
heating More curing cure time, redesign
time compound
• Sulphur blooming:  Reduce sulphur dose,
Excess sulphur redesign compd. formulation

• Bubbles on the surface:  Proper Bumping

Entrapped air
Advantages of Compression Moulding:
• Inexpensive tooling
-Moulds are generally simple.
• Less compound waste
-Unlike transfer moulding, there is no pot-rind.
• Excellent choice for bulky and high durometer parts
-To avoid flow problems.
• Good for low production runs.

Disadvantages of Compression Moulding:

• Longer compound preparation time
-A compound segment must be prepared for each cavity.
• Labor-intensive finishing
-The product flash is generally thick.
Applications:
• Automotive Parts:
Bushes, window
profiles, bellows
• Tires
• Conveyor belt, V-belt
• Rubber mats
• O-rings, oil seals
• Bridge bearing pads,
engine mountings
