Get your jelly bean… Don’t eat it!

Two questions:
1. What did you do over spring break?
2. How does the color of your jelly bean describe you?

Build on prior knowledge
We know how to solve something like this…
𝑥 2 = 25

What about something like this?

𝑥 3 = 27

Rational Exponents
• Ex: 𝑥 =
• If the index is not shown, it is understood to be 2 because it is a square root

• Ex: 27 3 =
• This is 27 to the 1/3 power, not 27 times 1/3!!

• Ex: 64 3 =
• It doesn’t matter if the squared goes inside or outside the radical

Solving by using nth roots
• To solve an equation with a variable raised to a power of n, we take the nth root of
each side:
• If 𝑥 4 = 𝑎, then 𝑥 =
𝒏
• Let n be an integer greater than 1 and a is a real number: 𝒂
• If n is even (we are taking an even root):
• If 𝑎 < 0 (negative):__________________
• If 𝑎 = 0:_____________________________
• If 𝑎 > 0 (positive):____________________
• If n is odd (we are taking an odd root):
• If 𝑎 < 0 (negative):__________________
• If 𝑎 = 0:_____________________________
• If 𝑎 > 0 (positive):____________________
Solving Equations
Solve. Round answers to the nearest hundredth, if necessary.

Ex: 4𝑥 5 = 128 Ex: (𝑥 − 2)3 = −14 Ex: 3(2𝑥 − 3)4 +4 = 25
