Lesson 1 – Materials That

Absorb Water
Celeste D. Moren
Tibig Elementary School
Objective:
Describe materials based
on the ability to absorb
water.
Engagement
1.Review. Which is solid,
liquid or gas?
• balloon with air
• water in the glass
• pencil
Motivation
Look around you. List down
materials that you can see in the
classroom.
What materials in your list are
solids, liquids and gas?
Let the pupils fill up the chart.
Solid Liquid Gas
Presentation:
Look at the materials you have listed. What if I
place one object in a basin with water?
Observe what happens.
Read the word: ABSORB
Besides grouping materials into states, it can
be grouped based on their ability to absorb
water.
Show a powerpoint presentation about
Properties of matter.
Exploration:
1. Advance preparation
Lesson I: LM Activity 1-“ Which
Materials Absorb Water and
Which Do Not?
2. Activity Proper
3. Group reporting
Lesson 1 – Materials That Absorb Water
Activity Sheet
Objective: Describe materials based on the ability
to absorb water.
What you need: Cotton balls, sponge, tap water,
tray, clock/timer, dropper/ dipper
What to do:
1.Put the material one by one on the tray.
2.Observe their characteristics and write them on
the chart below.
3. Get the dropper or dipper and put water on the materials.
Record on the chart what happened to the materials.

Guided Questions:
1.How can you describe each
material before placing them in
water?
2.Describe each material when
you put each of them in water.
3. Did all the materials absorb
Explanation:
Ask each group to present their data and answer the
guide questions.
1. Describe each material before placing them in water.
2.When you added water to the materials what happened
to the water? To the materials?
3. When you lifted the material and squeezed it, did
water come out? Did the material get wet?
4. Is the material heavier when wet?
5. What do you call this kind of materials?
6. What is porous materials?
Generalization:

What have you learned

about materials and
their ability to absorb
water?
Elaboration/ Extension:
1. Some of the materials absorb water
more than others. Cotton is very
porous, which makes it a natural
absorber of water.
2. Porous materials are materials
having small holes that allow air or
liquid to pass through.
Evaluation
Describe each material based on the ability
to absorb water. Write porous or non-
porous on the line.
__________1. rag
__________2. cotton balls
__________3. plastic cover
__________4. tissue paper
__________5. plastic bag
Assignment:
Describe why cotton absorbs
much water than the paper.
Write your answer on your
notebook.
