Solving problem using

statistics, also used to
compare new methods to
old ones.
Hypothesis in statistics means a statement or
presumption about one or more population.

We might never know whether a hypothesis is

valid or not, unless we check all the population;
which is not efficient.

Hypothesis Testing offers to take random

sample of a population, and use that information to
decide whether the hypothesis is right or wrong.

H0 often defined as Hypothesis 0;

while H1 often defined as Alternative Hypothesis.
What is Discrete
Distributions?
A table or formula that inputs all probability of a discrete
random variable.

Discrete uniform distribution, binomial distribution,

hypergeometric distribution, Poisson distribution are few
types of discrete distribution.
How About Continuous
Distributions..?
Continuous random variable has a zero probability to get one
of its value correctly.
Hence, the probability distribution can not be an input of a
table.

From previous slide, we can conclude that the difference
between discrete and continuous distributions is in the input
data.
Difference between
Discrete & Continuous
Distributions
Discrete has a smaller range of data. A discrete random
variable is a random variable with a finite (or countably
infinite) range.
Continuous has a wider range of data, seen from its zero
probability caused by such a wide range; continuous and
close to infinity. A continuous random variable is a random
variable with an interval (either finite or infinite) of real
numbers for its range.
A number of both distribution test frequently arise in applications.
For example, precisions of length of a machined part
measurement can be predicted by continuous distributions.
Usefulness & Application
of
Distribution Test
Another example of discrete distributions application is a voice
communication system for a business contains 48 external lines.
At a particular time, the system is observed, and some of the
lines are being used. Let the random variable X denote the
number of lines in use. Then, X can assume any of the integer
values 0 through 48. When the system is observed, if 10 lines are
in use, x = 10.
