From previous slide, we can conclude that the difference
between discrete and continuous distributions is in the input
data.
Difference between
Discrete & Continuous
Distributions
Discrete has a smaller range of data. A discrete random
variable is a random variable with a finite (or countably
infinite) range.
Continuous has a wider range of data, seen from its zero
probability caused by such a wide range; continuous and
close to infinity. A continuous random variable is a random
variable with an interval (either finite or infinite) of real
numbers for its range.
A number of both distribution test frequently arise in applications.
For example, precisions of length of a machined part
measurement can be predicted by continuous distributions.
Usefulness & Application
of
Distribution Test
Another example of discrete distributions application is a voice
communication system for a business contains 48 external lines.
At a particular time, the system is observed, and some of the
lines are being used. Let the random variable X denote the
number of lines in use. Then, X can assume any of the integer
values 0 through 48. When the system is observed, if 10 lines are
in use, x = 10.
