Star Wars

and Kohlberg
STUDENT 2
Star Wars tells a story about a
battle between the dark and the
light sides of the force. The two
sides of the force represent good
and evil.
Anakin Skywalker: Stage 1
Anakin Skywalker is a young Jedi who often
struggles with his beliefs of what is right and
wrong. In Episode II, Anakin pursues a
relationship with Padmae even though he is
told he is not allowed to love intimately.
Anakin represents Kohlberg’s 1st stage of
moral development Punishment and
Obedience Orientation. In this stage, right
and wrong is determined by whether or not a
person gets caught. Anakin determined that
his actions were acceptable as long as he
kept them hidden.
Qui Gon Jinn: Stage 5
Qui Gon Jinn is the character who first
discovered the young Anakin Skywalker. Qui
Gon Jinn shows us he is in Kohlberg’s 5th
Stage when he fights for Anakin to be trained
as a Jedi even though he is too old. Kohlberg’s
5th stage is Social Contract Orientation. In this
stage, people follow the rules, but realize some
rules do not protect some people’s rights. Just
like Qui Gon Jinn broke rules to make Anakin a
Jedi.
Luke Skywalker: Stage 6
Luke Skywalker is in Kohlberg’s 6th stage of moral
development, Universal Moral principles
Orientation. In this stage, Luke shows his ability
to break the rules in order to do good for all
people. Luke when battling Darth Vader in the last
episode gives into his passion and the dark side in
order to defeat the evil sith reign. Through this he
demonstrates Kohlbergs’s 6th stage, where he is
able to follow his conscience and may break rules
to to for the betterment of others.
