Dell MD array strengths
• Higher LFF drive scalability
• Dell MD series arrays can scale up to 192 LFF drives
• HP MSA 2040 scales only up to 96 LFF drives
• VMware integration features come as standard –no extra cost
• Dell MD series offers VMware VAAI, VASA and SRM features as standard
• HP MSA 2040 offers these features at additional cost
• Additional storage features
• MD series arrays come with thin provisioning, dynamic disk pools and data-at-rest
encryption through self encrypting drives (SEDs) in case customers require these features
• HP MSA 2040 arrays do not support these features as of date

13
HP Restricted – for HP and Channel Partner Internal Use Only
Key attack points against Dell MD arrays -
Detailed
• Higher performance and future proof strategy
• MSA 2040 gives up to 4x faster performance with new converged SAN controllers with a new
faster processor, next generation 16Gbps fiber channel and 12GB SAS host connectivity giving
high IOPS performance
• Dell has been adding data features on its arrays without upgrading controller performance. It still
runs on the older 8Gb FC or 6Gb SAS host connect options.
• No investment protection for users with older MD series arrays
• HP MSA storage offers unique data-in-place upgrade from P2000 G3 to MSA 2040 protecting
customer’s existing G3 investment. This helps customers to avoid any forklift upgrade in future
• Dell does not support any upgrade program from older 2U MD arrays to the current MD series
arrays
• Higher small form factor drive scalability
• MSA 2040 scales up to 199 Small form factor (SFF) drives without any additional license costs. SFF
drives have increased adoption and are likely to be used more in the future
• Dell MD series scales only up to a base of 120 SFF drives only and allows costly upgrade license
fee for 192 SFF drives
• Add on costs on data protection features
14 • MSA 2040 offers 64 snapshot and volume copy as standard. This ensures fewer add-on cost
HP Restricted – for HP and Channel Partner Internal Use Only
Key attack points against Dell MD arrays -
Detailed
• Higher flexibility and ROI
• MSA 2040 is modular in design and comes with both single and dual controller configurations in a
space saving 2U foot print. Users can start small with a single controller and two drives and scale to
dual controller and up to 199 drives in increments. Dell MD3 dense arrays occupy larger 4U space
and come only with dual controller configuration. Certainly, not an ideal product for customers with
limited storage requirements or budget constraints.
• MSA 2040 comes with 4GB cache per controller in both single and dual controller configurations. Dell
MD arrays support up to 4GB cache per controller for dual controller configurations only. The 2U MD
arrays with single controller support up to 2GB per controller
• Additional features on MSA 2040 include optional 512 snaps, drive spin down feature, battery free
cache back up. Dell MD3 falls offers only 256 snaps as optional, less RAID options, no drive spin
down, complex battery backed cache
• Dell MD3 product upgrades are not reliable and robust
• MD3 dense arrays run on the same controllers that of older MD series arrays. Software like dynamic
disk pooling, thin provisioning and high performance tier consume substantial controller resources
and thus pose higher risk of performance degradation on older controllers. Performance of these
controllers running these features need to be closely reviewed

15
HP Restricted – for HP and Channel Partner Internal Use Only
Key attack points against Dell MD arrays -
Detailed
• High performance tier (HPT) is complex and has its own conditions to enable
performance. The tiering feature does not appear to be well integrated and/or that this
functionality is not well aligned with entry system administrator’s capabilities. HP
expects entry level users to struggle tuning a system like this. Even if the user can get it
running once, the system appears to require substantial on-going maintenance to keep
the system tuned. A few notes from the Dell documentation on this feature:
• HPT benefits are dependent on array configuration, hosts, host operating system, host HBA, and
application workload.
• No benefit of HPT if the workload does not exceed base I/O performance limits of the controllers,
array CPUs are not fully utilized or if the array configuration is not optimized for performance. Proper
array and server tuning is required which needs constant attention administrator attention making
management complex.
• No benefit of HPT with single or few host links to the array, fewer number of disks or with lesser I/O
traffic on the array at any instant. One needs to have enough host links to provide data rates, very
high workload from host servers at any point, a minimum number of disks (below which HPT is not
beneficial) and enough host interfaces to sustain at least 1000 MB/s of data transfer rate.
• HPT does not benefit either if the workload is not spanned across both the controllers and involves
enough disk drives. HPT does not work with localized I/O workload and fewer disks. Not fit for
16
sequential transfer workload

MSA Cardinals 3 Differentiators
• Investment protection through data-in-place upgrades from older MSA arrays
• Prices in the IDC PB 1-2 with the performance of P2000 G3
• Simple to deploy, manage and affordable:
• Modular with both single or dual controller implementations
• All features needed to start a SAN storage are built-in: Choice of host interface, 4GB
cache/controller, 64 snap/volume copy std. for data protection, SAS drives support. No
additional license costs to run the system
• Fits well in a SMB customer’s budget
• Buy what you need: Dedicated host interface options as in other MSA systems: controllers
with FC or 1GbE or 10GbE host connectivity only. No need to invest on a built-in feature initially
and then invest heavily for the required additional features
• Tighter VMware integration on MSA Cardinals with VMware VAAI, VASA and SRM.
• Excellent ProLiant integration: If you running ProLiant servers, integration with the MSA
arrays is seamless and easier

Key Attack Points against IBM
DS3500/V3700/V3500
• Investment protection – A reliable storage strategy
• MSA 2040 comes with excellent investment protection program, allowing data-in-place
upgrades from the previous generation P2000 G3. A reliable and predictable entry storage
strategy by HP with customers not getting stranded with older investments
• MSA 2040 has new improved integration with the ProLiant DNA offering an excellent “server +
storage” end to end solution.
• In contrast, IBM entry SAN portfolio stand with two fragmented products – DS3500 and Storwize
V3700. No upgrade path from older DS systems to DS3500 or from the DS3500 to the recent
V3700.
• IBM lacks a solution based approach selling fragmented or siloed products with no strong
server-storage integration story. Customers don’t just buy a storage or a server system but prefer
an end-to-end solution
• The IBM one way data migration feature on v3700 does not offer the investment protection that
MSA offers to its customers.
• Importance of investment protection: As newer versions of Fibre channel, SAS or other host
connect technologies evolve, the importance of a modular, data-in-place upgrade strategy is
even more important. Customers need to review whether the new v3700 give controller upgrades
to these newer technologies in future. HP’s MSA product line has been doing this for four
31 successive generations
HP Restricted – for HP and Channel Partner Internal Use Only
Key Attack Points against IBM
DS3500/V3700/V3500
• Higher performance and future proof strategy
• MSA 2040 gives up to 4x faster performance with new converged SAN controllers with a new
processor, next generation 16Gbps fiber channel or 12GB SAS host connectivity
• IBM still runs on the older 8Gb FC or 6Gb SAS host connectivity
• Simple and flexible design – affordable and higher ROI
• Simple in design, MSA 2040 comes all the features, required to start a simple SAN storage, built-in –
choice of five different and dedicated host interface options, single or dual controller
implementation, 4Gb cache per controller and SSDs support. Users don’t need to make additional
investments on add-on items – fits well in the entry SAN budget
• MSA 2040 is modular in design allowing to start with single controller systems and few drives and
scale in increments in the future as needed - Avoid initial upfront investments to set up an entry
level SAN storage in limited budget situations
• MSA 2040 comes with 64 snapshot and volume copy bundled to start with basic data protection
needed
• With IBM DS3500, customer have less ROI as it just comes with SAS host connect option as std.
and 1Gb cache per controller. Customers need to make additional investments on add-on items

Key Attack Points against IBM
DS3500/V3700/V3500
• V3700 does not have a modular approach
• IBM V3700 comes with only dual controller implementation. It does not give the flexibility to start
with smaller deployments
• Higher scalability
•MSA 2040 scales higher with 96LFF or 199SFF drives. IBM V3700 falls behind with only 60LFF or
120SFF scalability
• Costlier optional features on DS3500
• IBM DS3500 comes with optional software features that might look exciting initially. These features
are prices much higher and may not fit a SMB customer’s budget well
• Disaster Recovery Option: $9,100 (almost the base unit cost of a storage system)
• Backup & Restore Option: $6,200
• Performance Read Cache Option: $9,400
• Super key option to enable the above three features: $15,800
• 96 to 192 drive expansion license key: $12,000

Key Attack Points against IBM
DS3500/V3700/V3500
• Thin Provisioning & Dynamic Disk Pooling – expected to impact
performance
• Features like thin provisioning and dynamic disk pooling are good but are expected to consume
substantial controller resources. Performance of the controllers need to be closely reviewed
while it runs all these software capabilities.
• Storwize v3700 comes with built-in features like thin provisioning and internal virtualization
which requires higher controller resources to process. IBM claims v3700 to handle massive
amounts of data. From the release documentation, built in thin provisioning feature comes from
its higher end Storwize v7000 which exhibits performance degradation due to processing of the
thin provisioning workload (link to whitepaper). On the v7000, IBM does not recommend using
thinly provisioned volumes for higher I/O intensive data as it reduces performance of the
controllers. This might require additional cache upgrade on the v3700 controllers for an
acceptable performance which would increase the cost. Impact of thin provisioning on the
controllers of v3700 is unclear but it is likely to have more impact than on the v7000
controllers. IBM has not published its best practices for the v37000 concerning thin
provisioning. Thus, not a reliable storage strategy.

Key Attack Points against
VNXe3300/VNX5200
• Investment protection – A reliable storage strategy
• MSA 2040 protects user’s investments through data-in-place upgrades from the previous
generation P2000 G3. A reliable and predictable entry storage strategy which does not leave
users stranded with older investments
• EMC still does not give a upgrade path from the older VNX5100 to the new VNX5200. VNX5200
will be a whole new investment for customers for just more drives, host ports, and claimed
higher performance which is unproven
• Future proof strategy with MSA 2040
• MSA 2040 implements the next generation 16Gbps fibre channel as well as 12GB SAS host
connectivity options. VNX5200 still implements the 8Gb FC with no stated path for 16Gb FC
• Reliable and predictable entry SAN strategy
o HP’s entry SAN offerings have been more reliable, familiar and easier for customers to adopt.
MSA 2040 comes with a similar design, architecture and management interface as the P2000 G3,
is modular and fits the entry SAN budget well. Customers don’t need to invest in a new platform
o EMC has transitioned from VNX5100 to a more complex architecture on VNX5200. VNX5200
comes with three sets of hardware: storage processors for block data access, X-blades for file
data access and 1U controller stations for X-blades management.
o VNX5200 comes with patented MCx operating system which is new to learn and manage leading
to increased costs
• Higher scalability

Key Attack Points against
VNXe3300/VNX5200
• Flexible and higher ROI
o MSA 2040 is modular as users can start small with a single controller and two drives and scale
to dual controllers and 199 drives as needed. VNX5200 or the VNXe3300 do not have a single
controller implementation and users directly start with dual controllers – not ideal for limited
budget needs
o MSA 2040 comes with a new converged SAN controller with onboard 8 or 16Gb FC host
connectivity enabling users to start with a SAN right away. VNX5200 has no onboard host
connectivity ports. Users need to order additional I/O cards to implement FC or iSCSI host
connections
o MSA 2040 comes with 6 or 12Gb SAS host connect option that reduces infrastructure costs
through direct attached storage. EMC still does not implement SAS based host connectivity on
entry SAN systems (VNXe3300/VNX5200)
o MSA 2040 controller enclosure supports both LFF and SFF drives. VNX5200 is limited to only
SFF drives in the controller enclosure
• Cost effective
• MSA 2040 offers 64 snapshot and Volume copy standard. EMC VNXe3300 and VNX5100 offers
these as optional
• MSA 2040 implements 1GbE or 10GbE iSCSI over the FC ports by using iSCSI-based SFPs. EMC

Key Attack Points against NetApp
FAS2240
• Higher performance Seriesand future proof strategy
• MSA 2040 gives higher performance with new converged SAN controllers housing a new
processor, next generation 16Gb fiber channel or 12Gb SAS host connectivity. MSA 2040
comes with new 4-port fiber channel and 10GbE iSCSI per controller option per controller
• NetApp FAS2200 still runs on 8Gb FC and gives lesser host connect count with 2-port FC or 10GbE
controller
• NetApp – a file server with block based features
• HP MSA 2040 is a dedicated block based SAN storage implementation with five different host
connectivity options.
• FAS2200 is a iSCSI based NAS system with WAFL file system which is primarily meant for file
services. Users need to populate with FC or 10GbE connectivity through additional cards to get
block based SAN storage – not a dedicated block based SAN strategy
• FAS2200 also does not support the SAS host connect option for direct attached storage which
reduces infrastructure costs required in certain situations
• Investment Protection
• MSA 2040 comes with excellent investment protection program, allowing data-in-place
upgrades from the previous generation P2000 G3. A reliable and predictable entry storage
strategy by HP with customers not getting stranded with older investments
56 • NetApp claims ability to upgrade FAS2240 to larger NetApp systems. No clear stated upgrade path
for FAS2040 customers to theHP Restricted – for HP and Channel Partner Internal Use Only
current FAS2200 systems.
Key Attack Points against NetApp
FAS2240
• Limited flexibility Series
• MSA 2040 controller enclosure scales up to 48TB on LFF drives and 28.8TB on SFF drives supporting
LFF/SFF SAS, SAS MDL drives. Users would need to invest on JBODs much later. This can be
economical in smaller storage requirements.
• FAS2200-2 controller enclosure supports only SFF SAS, 10k rpm drives and can scale only till
14.4TB. Users would need to invest on JBODs sooner driving user’s costs
• No SAS drives support no FAS2240-4: FAS 2200-4 runs on archival class SATA drives that are
not ideal for higher performance needs. FAS2240-4 is expected to be used more for archiving
purposes
• Both the FAS2240 systems come with limited functionalities. You can either set up only a faster SAN
or a data archiving system forcing customers to switch to a different system for additional
functionalities.
• NetApp software licensing is costlier
• With FAS2240, each filer/controller needs separate software license. So, double the no. of licenses
with dual controller systems. Hence pay extra.
• Offers snapshot bundled but separate license required to write a snapshot. Separate license to
restore a snapshot volume. Separate license to be bought to do full copy clones.
• For a filer failover, one needs to license Clustered Failover on both filers. Costs $4,480 per
57
license extra per controller.
HP Restricted – for HP and Channel Partner Internal Use Only
Key Attack Points against NetApp
FAS2240 Series
• NetApp Deduplication degrades performance
• Reduces performance by 30% or more. A post-process deduplication which requires to buy all
the disk capacity upfront to store your original data before you can deduplicate it. So where’s
the savings? Not the best solution on entry level storage
• NetApp performance degrades with time
• NetApp FAS systems performance degrades as disk utilization reaches 40-50%. Above 80%,
performance degrades further due to fragmentation
• Space reservation policy
• In block environments (FC or iSCSI), NetApp must reserve 100% or more space to avoid data
corruption. This is overhead capacity and is wasted space. For a mid-size customer with limited
budgets, it costs lot more
