Objective

The objective of this project is to design

and develop a system that control the traffic
in an intelligent manner, control street light
according to climatic condition, senses
climate etc and All these readings will send
to a central station. Any traveler can connect
his mobile phone with is central station and
get to know the climatic conditions and
traffic conditions of all places in a city.
Abstract
Nowadays congestion in traffic is a serious issue. The traffic congestion can
also be caused by large Red light delays. The delay of respective light is hard
coded in the traffic light and it is not dependent on traffic. Therefore for
simulating and optimizing traffic control to better accommodate this
increasing demand is arises. In this project we will make a traffic light
controller in a City using microcontroller. Thus we propose multiple traffic
light control and monitoring system. The system tries to reduce
possibilities of traffic jams, caused by traffic lights, to an extent. The system
is based on microcontroller. The micro-controller used in the system is
ATmega16 which is AVR mega family based. The system contains IR
transmitter and IR receiver which are mounted on one side of the road.
The IR system gets activated whenever any vehicle passes on road
between IR transmitter and IR receiver. Microcontroller controls the IR
system and counts number of vehicles passing on road. Based on different
vehicles count, the microcontroller takes decision and updates the traffic
light delays as a result. The traffic light is situated at a certain distance from
the IR system. Thus based on vehicle count, microcontroller defines
different ranges for traffic light delays and updates those accordingly.
Introduction:

Traffic research has the goal to optimize traffic flow of

people and goods. As the number of road users constantly
increases, and resources provided by current infrastructures
are limited, intelligent control of traffic will become a very
important issue in the future. However, some limitations to
the usage of intelligent traffic control exist. Avoiding traffic
jams for example is thought to be beneficial to both
environment and economy, but improved traffic-flow may
also lead to an increase in demand. There are several models
for traffic simulation. In our project we focus on optimization
of traffic light controller in a city using IR sensor and
developed a smart system using microcontroller Atmega16.
This system will detect the maximum traffic density side and
pass the green signal to that side. Other sides will get red
signal. It will continuously monitor the traffic and keep the
whole traffic in control
 On more objective of this project is to make a system
that will help us to save electricity by automatically
control the street lights. Street lights will be
automatically turn OFF in day time and in night time
light will glow with there10% intensity. When this
system will automatically detect the vehicle then lights
will turn ON with 100% intensity. By using this system
we can save 90% electricity used for street lights.
 This system will also monitor the rain in different
areas.
 All these readings will send to a central station. Any
traveller can connect his mobile phone with is central
station and get to know the climatic conditions and
traffic conditions of all places in city.
Literature survey
 Traffic congestion is a condition on transport networks that occurs as use increases,
and is characterized by slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queuing.
The most common example is the physical use of roads by vehicles. When traffic demand
is great enough that the interaction between vehicles slows the speed of the traffic
stream, this results in some congestion.
 As demand approaches the capacity of a road (or of the intersections along the road),
extreme traffic congestion sets in. When vehicles are fully stopped for periods of time, this
is colloquially known as a traffic jam or traffic snarl-up. Traffic congestion can lead to
drivers becoming frustrated and engaging in road rage.
 Mathematically, congestion is usually looked at as the number of vehicles that pass through
a point in a window of time, or a flow. Congestion flow lends itself to principles of fluid
dynamics.

 The Texas Transportation Institute estimated that, in 2000, the 75 largest metropolitan
areas experienced 3.6 billion vehicle-hours of delay, resulting in 5.7 billion U.S. gallons
(21.6 billion liters) in wasted fuel and $67.5 billion in lost productivity, or about 0.7% of
the nation's GDP. It also estimated that the annual cost of congestion for each driver was
approximately $1,000 in very large cities and $200 in small cities. Traffic congestion is
increasing in major cities and delays are becoming more frequent in smaller cities and
rural areas.

Working
 Figure above is showing the block diagram of whole system.
 Microcontroller Atmega16 will be used as central controlling unit.
 A series of IR sensors will be installed below the road divider on all
four sides.
 These IR sensors will give their output to microcontroller.
 Microcontroller will detect these signals and find out, which side of
road is having maximum traffic.
 Maximum traffic light will get green signal and other sides will get red.
 Traffic intensity of all signals will be send to a central station.
 To automatically turn ON street lights Microcontroller will first check
whether it is day time or night by using LDR sensor.
 .
 In day time all lights will Turn OFF automatically.
 In night time all lights will glow with their 10%
intensity.
 When this system will automatically detect the
vehicle then only that street lights which in near
the vehicle will turn on with 100% intensity and
other lights will glow with only 10% intensity.
 Rain sensor will detect the rain fall.
 All these readings can be seen by travellers on
android mobile phone.

Conclusions and Future Scope:
We have studied the optimization of traffic light controller in a City using
IR sensors and microcontroller.it shows the basic block diagram of the
system and the complete description of microcontroller board.
No. of passing vehicle in the fixed time slot on the road decide the
density range of traffics and on the basis of vehicle count microcontroller
decide the traffic light delays for next recording. This data can be record
and recorded data can be downloaded to the computer through
communication between microcontroller and the computer. The
Administrator sitting on computer can command system (microcontroller)
to download recorded data, update light delays, erase memory, etc. Thus
administrator on a central station computer can access traffic conditions
on any approachable traffic lights and nearby roads to reduce traffic
congestions to an extent. In future this system can be used to inform
people about different places traffic condition. Data transfer between the
microcontroller and computer can also be done through telephone
network, data call activated SIM This technique allows the operator to
gather the recorded data from a far end to his home computer without
going there. Traffic lights can be increased to N number and traffic light
control can be done for whole city by sitting on a single place.
