BRAYTON

CYCLE
BRAYTON CYCLE

In 1872, George Brayton applied for a patent

for his "Ready Motor," a reciprocating

constant pressure engine (Petrol combusted

engine). The engine used a separate piston

compressor and expander, with compressed

air heated by internal fire as it entered the

expander cylinder.
There are two types of Brayton cycles
used in Gas turbine for power production

• Open-cycle gas-turbine
• Closed-cycle gas turbine

Actual Brayton cycle:

1.Adiabatic process - compression.

2.Isobaric process - heat addition.

3.Adiabatic process - expansion.

4.Isobaric process - heat rejection.

IDEAL BRAYTON CYCLE:
1.Isentropic process - Ambient air is drawn into the compressor, where it is pressurized.

2.Isobaric process - The compressed air then runs through a combustion chamber,

where fuel is burned, heating that air—a constant-pressure process, since the chamber is

open to flow in and out.

3.Isentropic process - The heated, pressurized air then gives up its energy, expanding

through a turbine (or series of turbines). Some of the work extracted by the turbine is

used to drive the compressor.

4.Isobaric process - Heat rejection (in the atmosphere).

Brayton Cycle: Ideal Cycle for Gas-Turbine Engines
Gas turbines usually operate on an open cycle..

Air at ambient conditions is drawn into the compressor, where its

temperature and pressure are raised. The high pressure air proceeds into
the combustion chamber, where the fuel is burned at constant pressure.
The high-temperature gases then enter the turbine where
they expand to atmospheric pressure while producing
power output.

Some of the output power is used to drive the

compressor.

The exhaust gases leaving the turbine are thrown out

(not re-circulated), causing the cycle to be classified as
an open cycle.
Closed Cycle Model
The open gas-turbine cycle can be modelled as a

closed cycle, using the air-standard assumptions.

The compression and expansion processes remain the

same, but the combustion process is replaced by a

constant-pressure heat addition process from an

external source.

The exhaust process is replaced by a constant-

pressure heat rejection process to the ambient air.
