Hardware: Switch Fabric Module
SF module is divided into two half boards. One half
contains the CPU and peripherals and the other half
contains the Switch fabric components.
The CPU keeps all Layer2/3 route tables
up to date. In addition it processes all
packets that cannot be handled by
Layer2/3 due to unknown route or
packet type. All traffic from the I/O
modules transverses the Switch fabric. 1 2 3 4 5 6
Install module in slots 5 and 6. SF in slot 6 can assume
the processing of a failing primary SF in slot 5. When
the SF in slot 6 completes initialization, it relearns the
routing and VLAN bridging information for the switch. 1 = Ethernet Management port
When both SF modules are present, switch fabric 2 = DTE/DCE switch
functions are shared between the two cards. If one 3 = Console and Modem ports
card fails, it reverts operation to one SF. 4 = Reset button (warm boot)
If the HA-CPU flag is set the static routes and ARP 5 = PCMCIA card slot
entries are synchronized into the redundant CPU and 6 = LEDs
will result in no interruption of network services
(excludes ATM interruption).
Pressing the reset button will perform a warm boot.
Supports various sizes of ATA-compliant (SANDISK)
PCMCIA flash memory cards.

Software: Boot Sequence
Boot monitor image load

CPU loads the boot monitor image.

Boot configuration load

Boot configuration is loaded from a file called /pcmcia/boot.cfg from the PCMCIA card.
If there is no PCMCIA card or the file does not exist on the PCMCIA card the switch
looks in the onboard flash memory for /flash/boot.cfg. If the file is not present it
creates a default file called /flash/boot.cfg.

Run-time image load

The run-time image is loaded. This software image initialized the modules and
provides full routing switch functionality. The run-time image can be loaded from
onboard flash, PCMCIA, or from a TFTP server using the management port. The
default load order is defined in the boot configuration file (boot.cfg). You can change
the parameters using CLI or Device Manager. Example of a run-time image file is

If the ingress frame is a routed frame and the ARU does not know the destination address, the frame is sent to the
CPU for address resolution

If the ARU does not recognize the source MAC address, the frame is sent to the CPU. As addresses are learned
by the CPU, they are passed to all the ARUs (both layer 2 and 3 addresses).
Spanning Tree Protocol / Spanning Tree Group

Spanning Tree algorithm is used in bridged internetwork

environment to detect and break circular traffic patterns
by disabling certain links (otherwise known as loops).
Loop will occur without STP
The IEEE 802.1d protocol will inhibit logical loops in
layer 2 bridged or switched network. When multiple
paths exist, the STP automatically configures the
network and places some ports on standby to provide
the most efficient traffic paths, avoiding continual
looping of frames. If a path fails, the protocol
reconfigures the network to activate standby ports and
bring up the back-up path.

The best path is determined by neighboring switches

Spanning Tree Port States
Disabled – There is no link or the port has been manually disabled. Will not
participate in the Spanning Tree Protocol.
Listening – The port is receiving and transmitting Config BPDUs. No user STP enabled
traffic traverses the port. No loops

VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network)
What is a VLAN? VLAN 1
-A VLAN is a collection of switch ports that Switch 47.10.10.0/24
make up a single broadcast (Layer 2) domain.
-A VLAN can be defined for a single switch or it
can span multiple switches.
-A VLAN is a logical entity created in the
software configuration to control traffic flow and
ease the administration of moves, adds, and
changes on the network.
-Routing is required to interconnect VLANs.
Internal
-802.1q (VLAN Tagging) Provides a Bridge
standardized approach to extending VLANs
across multiple switches.

VLAN Types
•Port Based
•Policy Bases Router
-IP Subnet
-Protocol Type
-MAC Address
Internal
Refer to diagram to the right: Bridge
VLAN 1 will only see traffic from VLAN 1
(broadcast and multicast included).
VLAN 2 will only see traffic from VLAN 2
(broadcast and multicast included).
VLANs are identified by a VLAN ID that is
included in the forwarding table for each VLAN.
As with traditional LANs, a router is required for VLAN 2
forwarding traffic between VLANs. 47.10.20.0/24

VLANs Rules for Passport 8600

• Default VLAN + 2013 User-defined VLANs

• Each additional STG (Spanning Tree Group) created reduces the
maximum number of VLANs by one
• For every VLAN with an MLT port it reduces the maximum number of
VLANs by eight.
• A VLAN must be in only one STG.
• STGs do not know about VLANs.
• The Default VLAN (VID=1) and the “Unassigned” VLAN may not be
deleted.

Spanning Tree and VLANs

By default all Layer 2 ports are in STG 1, regardless of their

membership in VLANs. This can create a blocked port between
VLANs.
One way to solve this issue is to create a STG for each VLAN and this
will ensure that VLANs can communicate.

MLT (Multi Link Trunking)

Multi-Link Trunking (MLT) is a

point-to-point connection that
aggregates multiple ports so
that they logically act like a
single port with aggregated
bandwidth.
MLT can be used to achieve
higher aggregate throughput
on a switch-to-switch or
switch-to-server application.

-MLT supports 802.1d Spanning Tree.

-MLT supports 802.1q VLAN tagging. The 8600 supports up to 32 MLT groups.

-The 8600 is limited to a maximum of 8 ports in an MLT group.

-All ports in an MLT group must be of the same media type, copper or fiber.

-All ports in an MLT group must have the same speed and duplex configuration.

OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) Link State routing protocol. Routers use OSPF to send routing
tables to all nodes (routers) in a network. The OSPF algorithm calculates the shortest path to
each node based on the topographic characteristics of the network (i.e. path, link speed). Each
router sends an updated table (LSA link state advertisement) that describes the state of its own
links and also sends its complete routing topography. The router uses all received advertised
LSAs and its own LSA to comprise its link state database (LSDB) or routing table.

VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol)

VRRP is an election protocol that dynamically assigns responsibility for a virtual router to one
of the VRRP routers on a LAN. The election process provides dynamic fail-over in the
forwarding responsibility should the Master become unavailable.

VRRP Troubleshooting suggestions

Begin by determining which interfaces are running VRRP.

Make note of the state of each interface (ie. Master or Backup).

Look at the configured parameters, such as VRIDs and IP addresses, for

each interface and be sure they match on all VRRP routers.

Capture the VRRP packets and be sure they are coming from the expected
router at the expected time interval.

Possible Issues

Unknown Chassis Type

Problem:
CLI screen continually scrolls: Task=tChasServ chGetNumPsu: unknown chassis type 1623064842
The CPU/SF is running an older release and does not recognize the chassis.
Solution:
Upgrade the CPU to the latest release.
The error will continue to scroll when entering the commands to upgrade.
Link will not come up (no link light)
Problem:
No link light on port when cabling up to subtending equipment
Solution:
Un enable auto negotiation and manually set up the link speed and duplex.
Also verify the cable and make sure you are using the right cable.
Check to see if Spanning Tree disabled the port.
PC to switch (hub) = straight-through cable Router to switch (hub) = straight-through cable
Router to router = cross-over cable Switch (hub) to switch (hub) = cross-over cable
Cannot connect to console port
Problem:
There is no data in Hyperterm screen when cabled to the console
Solution:
Press enter a few times.
Make sure you have a cross-over console cable.
Verify Hyperterm settings: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control.
DTE/DCE switch: DTE if using a cross-over console cable DCE if using a straight-through console cable.
Possible Issues

Cannot add port to VLAN

Problem:
Cannot add a port to a VLAN (Invalid Port Member)
Solution:
Port was in STG 2 and it would not let him add to the VLAN because the STG for the VLAN was set to 1.
Change the STG for the port to 1.
Cannot read the PCMCIA card
Problem:

Problem:
Cannot ping (link down) over MLT link to Storm IA server.
Solution:
Toggle MLT Tagging. If tagging is on it is expecting a tagged packet.
Possible Issues

Cannot add IP Address to VLAN

Problem:
Cannot add an IP address a VLAN
Solution:
Check the subnetting (do not use network or broadcast address for IP assignment of port or VLAN).
Check to see if IP address/subnet is already in use by another VLAN or Mgmt Port.
Use a subnet Calculator!
Make sure you are not using a PP8100 CPU. PP8100 is for switching (layer 2) only.

Cannot Telnet or FTP to Passport 8600

Problem:
Unable to telnet or FTP to Passport 8600
Solution:
Disable any firewall software.
Check the bootconfig flags (show boot flags) make sure telnetd and ftpd are set to true.

Not able to communicate with OSPF neighbors

Problem:
PP8600 not able to exchange routes with OSPF neighbors.
Solution:
Verify OSPF configuration (area id, authentication key, ospf globally enabled, ospf on port / vlan enabled,
etc).
Ping / traceroute to the neighboring OSPF router.
Perform a trace on OSPF packets to see where the failure exists.
