Definition

• A roof is defined as the topmost part of a building


constructed in the form of a framework to give
protection to the building

Eg: Slab of a building provided on the framework of


columns and beams.

Functions of a roof

• It protects the building against rain, snow, wind etc.,

• It provides insulation against sound and heat

• It distributes the loads coming on it to the supports

• It protects the building from the damaging forces coming

from its top and bottom

• It acts as a floor for the next storey in case of


multistoried buildings

• It provides playing accommodation for children

Roofs are mainly classified in to the following three


categories.

1.Pitched or Sloping roofs,
