Education 201 – Introduction to Elementary
Education

Birth – Second Grade Teacher
 To receive a license to teach Early Childhood – a person
must complete and pass the Praxis test, have a bachelor’s
degree/graduate degree from a college or university,
various semester credit hours in course(s) of Early
Childhood Education/Development, completed a
program of preparation to teach, hold a license to teach,
and must have experience in teaching children under the
age of six.
Elementary Subjects k-8
Teacher
 To receive a license to teach K-8 – a person must
complete and pass the Praxis test, hold a bachelor’s
degree (college or university), thirty-two credit hours in
elementary education, eighteen semester hours in
mathematics, science, and social studies. Furthermore,
to add an endorsement to the elementary license, a
person must complete twelve semester credit hours
within that specific area (technology, English, health,
literacy, science, social studies, etc.).
Substitute Teacher
 In order to be a substitute teacher in the state of Nevada
for grades K-12 – a person must be a citizen of the United
States or a lawful permanent resident (with a valid
Permanent Resident Card). Additionally, the individual
must earn a minimum of sixty semester credits, and an
associates degree or higher (from a college or university).
Special education teacher
 In order to receive an endorsement as a special education
teacher in the state of Nevada – a person must hold a
valid elementary, middle school, secondary, special
education or a special license, obtain three years of
verified experience in special education, and three
semester credits of course work in behavior
management, methods of teaching pupils who have
specific learning disabilities, parental involvement in
special education, and methods of teaching students in
this program.
Reading specialist
 In order to receive an endorsement as a reading specialist
in the state of Nevada – a person must hold a master’s
degree, three years of verified experience in teaching,
have a valid elementary, middle school, secondary or
special teaching license, and have completed at least
sixteen graduate semester credits in reading to help in
the areas of foundations of reading, etiology and
diagnosis of reading problems, practicum in reading, and
research in reading.
Art specialist
 In order to receive an endorsement as an
art specialist in the state of Nevada – a
person must complete the Praxis Core
Academic Skills for Educators, Principles
of Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12,
Praxis Content Area Test, hold a
bachelor’s degree, three semester credit
hours in parental involvement, twenty-
two credits of professional education
(methods of teaching art, foundations of
education), and thirty-six credits in the
principles of fine and applied arts
(history of art, design, drawing, painting,
digital/graphic arts, ceramics/sculpture,
and photography/printmaking).
Library/media Specialist
 To receive an endorsement as an library/media specialist
in the state of Nevada – a person must have a valid
elementary, middle school, secondary or special teaching
license, completed a program for school library media
specialists, hold a master’s or more advanced degree in
library science (with specialization in school
librarianship), and have completed twenty-one credits in
this particular area to help in the organization of a school
library, cataloging, reference, bibliography, use of
selection of educational media, children’s and young
adults’ literature, computers in the library, and a
supervised practicum in a K-12 library.
Physical education specialist
 In order to receive an endorsement as a
physical education specialist in the state
of Nevada – a person must complete the
Praxis Core Academic Skills for
Educators, Praxis Content Area Test,
hold a bachelor’s degree, three semester
credit hours in parental involvement,
completed a program of preparation for
teaching P.E. for grades K-12, completed
forty-two credits in this particular
profession (anatomical kinesiology, the
physiology of exercise, testing and
measuring the skill and ability of a pupil
in P.E., etc.), and twenty-two credits in
professional education.
Music specialist
 In order to receive an endorsement as a music specialist
in the state of Nevada – a person must complete the
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, Principles of
Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12, Praxis Content Area
Test, hold a bachelor’s degree, three semester credit
hours in parental involvement, completed a program
for teaching music, completed twenty-two credits of
professional education, and thirty-six credits in the
foundations of music (music theory, history of music,
applied music, conducting, techniques for brass,
woodwind, percussion, piano, and string instruments,
vocal techniques, and music ensemble).
Educational computer
strategist
 In order to receive an endorsement as an educational
computer strategist in the state of Nevada – a person
must hold an elementary, middle school, secondary or
special license, program for teaching computer-based
applications, twelve credits in educational issues relating
to computers, methods for teaching the integration of
technology with curriculum, and methods for teaching
computer application (productivity tools (word
processing, databases, etc.), communication tools,
research tools, or multimedia tools).
School counselor
 In order to receive an endorsement as a school counselor
in the state of Nevada – a person must complete the
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, Praxis
Content Area Test, three semester credit hours in
parental involvement, hold a master’s or more advanced
degree in school counseling (college or university), hold
a specialty credential as a National Certified School
Counselor, must have at least two years of teaching or
school counseling experience, completed 600 hours of
school counseling practicum, and thirty-six graduate
credits in school guidance and counseling.
School psychologist
 To receive an endorsement as a school psychologist in the
state of Nevada – a person must complete three semester
credit hours in parental involvement and family
engagement, hold a certificate as a Nationally Certified
School Psychologist, hold a graduate degree with
preparation in school psychology, have completed
practicum and a minimum of a one thousand hour
internship in school psychology, and have earned sixty
graduate credits in the area of psychology and education
of the normal child and a child with disabilities, psycho-
educational assessment, techniques of intervention, and
experimental design.
School administrator
 To receive an endorsement as an school administrator in the
state of Nevada – a person must hold a valid elementary,
middle school, secondary or special teaching license, hold a
master’s degree, completed three years of teaching experience
in accredited K-12 schools, twenty-four semester hours of
graduate courses in the administration of a school
(administration of a school, supervision of instruction,
development of personnel, finances of a school, laws that
apply to schools, curriculum, educational research, and an
internship in school administration), and have completed an
additional twelve semester hours of graduate courses in this
particular program.
