CORE TEACHING STANDARDS

• All teachers are expected to meet these standards.

• They are specific to their discipline and are at the “acceptable” level or higher
• The Core Teaching Standards are broken up into 4 main categories
1. The Learner and The Learning
• Includes Standards #1-3
2. The Content
• Includes Standards #4-5
3. Instructional Practice
• Includes Standards #6-8
4. Professional Responsibility
• Includes Standards #9-10
THE LEARNER AND LEARNING
Standard #1- Learner Development
“The teacher understands how learners
grow and develop, recognizing that
patterns of learning and development vary
individually within and across the cognitive,
linguistic, social, emotional, and physical
areas, and designs and implements
developmentally appropriate and
challenging learning experiences.”
• The teacher understands how learning occur
• The teacher understands that each learner’s
cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and
physical development influences learning
• The teacher identifies readiness for learning
• The teacher understands the role of language
and culture in learning
• The teacher also understands how to use the
information above to modify instruction
THE LEARNER AND LEARNING
Standard #2-Learning Differences.
The teacher uses understanding of
individual differences and diverse cultures
and communities to ensure inclusive
learning environments that enable each
learner to meet high standards
• The teacher understands and identifies differences in
approaches to learning and performance
• The teacher understands students with exceptional needs
• The teacher knows about second language acquisition
processes
• The teacher understands that learners bring advantage
from experience, abilities, talents, prior learning, etc.
• The teacher knows how to access information about the
values of diverse cultures and communities
• The teacher will take the above and incorporate in their
lesson, or modify their instruction accordingly

Standard #3-Learning Environments
“Learning Environments. The teacher
works with others to create environments
that support individual and collaborative
learning, and that encourage positive social
interaction, active engagement in learning,
and self-motivation.”
• The teacher understands the relationship
between motivation and engagement
• The teacher knows how to help learners
work productively and cooperatively
• The teacher knows how to collaborate with
learners
• The teacher understands how learner
diversity can affect communication
• The teacher knows how to use technologies
CONTENT
Standard #4-Content Knowledge
“The teacher understands the
central concepts, tools of inquiry,
and structures of the discipline(s)
he or she teaches and creates
learning experiences that make
the discipline accessible and
meaningful for learners to assure
mastery of the content.”
• The teacher understands major concepts,
assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and
ways of knowing
• The teacher understands common misconceptions
in learning the discipline
• The teacher knows and uses the academic
language of the discipline
• The teacher knows how to integrate culturally
relevant content to
• The teacher has a deep knowledge of student
content standards and learning progressions
CONTENT
Standard #5-Application of Content
The teacher understands how to connect
concepts and use differing perspectives to
engage learners in critical thinking, creativity,
and collaborative problem solving related to
authentic local and global issues.
• The teacher understands the ways of
knowing in his/her discipline
• The teacher understands how current
interdisciplinary themes connect to the
core subjects
• The teacher understands the demands of
accessing and managing information as well
as how to evaluate issues of ethics and
quality related to information and its use.
