Introduction
 We conducted our Oral Health Program at Charlton-Pollard elementary school with
children aging 5-11 years old. Our program targets twenty first grade students that
have little to no knowledge of the correct toothbrushing technique, nutrition and
cavity formation.

 Our goal was to create and implement an oral health program that will educate
the students of healthy nutritional habits and the value of oral care.

 Our objectives were to increase the student’s nutritional awareness by 5% by the

last visit, to demonstrate proper brushing on a typodont, to educate the students
of fluoride’s important role in cavity prevention, and to help the children
appreciate the importance of a healthy oral cavity.
Rationale

 Schools are an ideal setting in which to reach children. During childhood, oral
health behaviors as well as beliefs and attitudes develop. Children are
receptive to new information, and the earlier the good oral habits are
established the greater their impact. Messages about achieving and maintaining
good oral health can be reinforced regularly throughout school years which will
promote healthy behaviors among students throughout their lives.
Session One
 Phone interview with Mrs. Jackson, the
teacher of our target population.

 An explanation of why we were doing the

program, what our goals were, and what we
would be presenting at each session was
made.

school’s history, Mrs. Jackson’s education
level, and water fluoridation
