Analyze how partisanship and
bipartisanship affect political parties and
influences how our government functions

What are the political parties of today?

Political Parties

Republican Party

Democratic Party

Libertarian Party

Green Party

Constitution Party

Many other minor political parties

Democratic Party Ideals

General belief - government action to achieve

equal opportunity and equality for all

Democratic Party policies generally

emphasize the need for the government to
solve problems for the People

Democratic Party = Liberal views

Conservative Ideals

General belief - government should be used to

provide people the freedom necessary to
pursue their own goals

emphasize empowerment of the individual
to solve their own problems

Republican Party = Conservative views

Faction - a group of individuals, such as a political
party, a trade union, or other group with a common
political purpose

Members of factions band together as a way of

achieving certain goals and advancing their agenda
and position within an organization

Factions are not limited to political parties; they can and

frequently do form within any group that has some sort of
political aim or purpose (what are some?)

Partisan

In politics, a partisan is a committed member

of a political party

A strong supporter of a party, cause, or

candidate

In multi-party systems, the term is used for

politicians who strongly support their party's
policies and are reluctant to compromise
with their political opponents
Partisanship - Emphatic supporter of a
particular person, group, party, or cause
[biased and emotional allegiance]

What is bipartisanship?
Bipartisan - Involving the agreement or
cooperation of two political parties that usually
oppose each other's policies

Finding a common ground through a

compromise (inclusion of members of two
parties or factions)
In politics, gridlock refers to a situation when
there is difficulty passing laws that satisfy
the needs of the people

Nothing productive gets accomplished! -

Stagnant (no progress)

Gridlock can occur when two legislative

houses, or the executive branch and the
legislature are controlled by different political
parties, or otherwise cannot agree
Think about 2-3 issues that you’re passionate
about and quietly WRITE (don’t say) them
down on your notes page
Think carefully about this as it pertains to the issues you
wrote down - When you begin to hear someone introduce
information that presents an opposing viewpoint (someone
says something you initially disagree with), which of these
is generally your reaction?

1. Interrupt them with your opinion on the subject

2. Wait for them to finish, but you’re not really paying

attention because you’re pondering your response

3. Listen intently to what they have to say and wait for

them to finish before you compile thoughts and reply
Who in
here is
NOT guilty
of doing
this, at
least from
time to
time?
(Debates?)
Who in here is an expert on something
(ANYTHING)? Games, cars, ditching
class/school without getting caught?

What are you an expert at?

Are you at the level of expertise where you
don’t have anything else to learn about the
subject?

Anyone in here at that level on ANYTHING?

We ALL can learn more on EVERY subject
