Guide
The Service Bill of Material (SBOM) tool was designed to assist the user in creating a
customized service parts stocking list for a specific engine or engine configuration
(once a representative Engine Serial Number (ESN) is known).
– The SBOM tool derives the service level parts based on an ESN and certification repair level.
Parts displayed are the most current parts including the supersessions and kits. The SBOM
tool shows the certification repair level (Maintenance, Lite Repair, Repair, Full Service, Master
Service) as well as the recommended stock list for the user’s evaluation.

“Stock List” designations have been added to a small amount of Maintenance, Lite Repair,
Repair and Full Service parts. The “stock list” designation is a best estimate of the highest
probability or typical service event type parts that may be stocked depending on the
certification repair level of the service provider. Service providers will still need to evaluate
the list to determine appropriate coverage.

Service Levels Specified Within the Dealer Certification Program:
Maintenance: Visual inspection (broken or leaking) and remove and replace on external
components limited to: engine water pump, sea water pump and impeller, exhaust manifold,
fan hub, belt tensioner, thermostat, coolant heaters, brushes, oil fill cap, dipstick and
dipstick holder, filter heads, filters, belts, external lines, cup plugs and hoses only on the
product(s) for which that service provider is certified.
 Restrictions: Not authorized to repair failures on internally rotating or reciprocating components,
removal of cylinder head or external components, including but not limited to fuel system, electronic
components, ECM, sensors, aftertreatment components, EGR cooler, and oil cooler. Not authorized
to install and commission.
Lite Repair: Troubleshooting and repair on components in Maintenance task list and valve
cover and valve cover gasket, vibration damper, EGR cooler, oil cooler, turbocharger,
engine mounted sensors, wiring harness on the product(s) for which that service provider is
certified.
 Restrictions: Not authorized to repair fuel system, ECM, electronic system, aftertreatment system
sensors, aftertreatment repairs, internally rotating or reciprocating components and removal of
cylinder head. Not authorized to install and commission.

Service Levels Specified Within the Dealer Certification Program:
Repair: Maintenance and Lite Repair tasks as well as troubleshooting and repair on front
cover and front cover gasket, front and rear crankshaft oil seals, fuel system, electronic
controls, ECM, sensors, aftertreatment, EGR cooler, oil cooler, installation and
commissioning on the product(s) for which that service provider is certified.
 Restrictions: Pre-approval required to repair internally rotating or reciprocating components,
removal of cylinder head.
Full Service: Maintenance, Lite Repair, Repair, and Full Service tasks allowed. All tasks
except restrictions.
 Restrictions: Pre-approval required to re-machine cylinder block counterbores and other salvage
operations.
Master Service: Maintenance, Lite Repair, Repair, Full Service allowed and Master
Service tasks allowed. Re-machine cylinder block counterbores and other salvage
operations on the product(s) for which that service provider is certified. This is the highest
level of certification for any product.
 Restrictions: None
Note: the parts on the SBOM list are identified by noun name using specified service levels as defined by the Dealer Certification Program. Details of
Dealer Certification can be found on Cummins Worldwide Service Provider System (WWSPS) website.

SBOM Report Attributes
The SBOM list displays the current part numbers, including supersessions and most kits,
needed to service the particular Engine Serial Number. In addition to the parts list, the tool
also displays other attributes for each part number to assist in making decisions on
stocking, such as:
– Part Description
– Certification Service Level (Maintenance, Maintenance Stock List, Lite Repair, Lite Repair
Stock List, Repair, Repair Stock List, Full Service, Full Service Stock List, Master Service)
– ReCon cross reference part number if applicable
– Quantity of part number required per engine
– Current and Future Sales Status Codes

Factors to Consider

Many factors influence a particular stocking list, and these factors should all be considered
when determining a list that best suits a location’s needs. Among those factors are:
– Certification Level of the service provider
– Customer expectations for repair timeliness
– Available working capital to invest in repair parts
– Proximity to regional headquarters, RDCs and PDCs
– Local engine population to be supported with parts inventory
– Historical knowledge of parts that have high turnover

The SBOM tool should NOT be used as a method of determining a “Required” parts
stocking list, but rather serve as a guide for the most common stock/usage type parts that
would likely be beneficial to have on hand to support local customers.

Stock Lists for Certified Locations
Once an SBOM report is generated for a particular ESN, a stocking facility or service
provider can create a part number list based on their certification level using the
precoded/suggested “stock list” parts or historical knowledge of parts with high turnover.
 Certified repair locations: If you are certified as:
– Maintenance repair location - you may use the “Maintenance Stock List” parts.
– Lite Repair location - you may use the “Maintenance Stock List” parts plus the “Lite Repair Stock List” parts.
– Repair location - you may use the “Maintenance Stock List” parts plus the “Lite Repair Stock List” parts plus
the “Repair Stock List” parts.
– Full Service location - you may use the “Maintenance Stock list” parts plus the “Lite Repair Stock List” parts
plus the “Repair Stock List” parts plus the “Full Service Stock List” parts.

NOTE: Parts listed as “Maintenance”, “Lite Repair”, “Repair”, or “Full Service” (without the “stock list”
designation) may also be used to build stocking lists.

Stocking Quantities
Once a particular part number stock list with component quantity has been defined, it is necessary to
determine the quantities for each part based on engine population. When determining the part number
quantities, the same local inputs of certification level, customer expectations, available capital, and
location should also be considered. In addition to these factors, you should also know the engine
population being supported.

The following table can be used to help with this process:

 Example: A location is supporting 150 engines of a particular engine configuration.
– They have determined that an oil pan gasket is a part they want to stock. From the table above, they should stock
a quantity of 3 pieces.
– They have determined that an injector is a part they want to stock. From the table above, they should stock a
quantity of 18 pieces (3 X 6 injectors/engine).

SBOM Sorting
The parts in the Excel file can be sorted or filtered so that they appear in Service Level groups
(Maintenance, Maintenance Stock List, Lite Repair, Lite Repair Stock List, Repair, Repair Stock List,
Full Service, Full Service Stock List).

Sort the SBOM by your certification repair level.

– “Stock List” designations are a best estimate of the highest probability or typical service event
type parts that may be stocked depending on the certification repair level of the service
provider.
– Note: Other parts coded “Maintenance”, “Lite Repair”, “Repair”, or “Full Service” may still be
applicable for stocking.

Consider all your local inputs when developing your stocking list:
– Certification level of service provider, customer expectations, proximity to regional
headquarters, engine population, historical knowledge of high turnover parts, availability of
working capital investment, etc.

Tips While Evaluating an SBOM List

1. Filters (fuel, lube, coolant) and Cleaners (air): The SBOM should show the equivalent
Cummins Filtration part number. If a Cummins Filtration part number is not found, you will need to manually
find and add the appropriate part numbers by cross-referencing the SBOM filter part numbers (Cummins
numbers) to Cummins Filtration part numbers using the following website’s cross reference catalog:
http://www.cumminsfiltration.com.
2. ReCon: If ReCon is available, the SBOM should show this p/n in the “ReCon X-ref”
column.
3. Kits: The higher level kit should be shown if the individual component is not salable.
a) In some cases, both the individual component and the kit will be shown if both are salable
(i.e…..front/rear crank seals + crank seal kits)
b) If the kit is not shown, the Service Bill of Material Sales Status Code Training document can be used to
give guidance on how to determine the kit part number.
4. Component Qty: It is suggested to stock the required qty as needed by the engine.
Most quantities required in engine = 1.
a) Note: Certain part numbers with common noun names (capscrews, washers, etc…) may be used multiple
times in an engine. It is suggested to look for these ‘duplicated’ part numbers.

Tips While Evaluating an SBOM List

5. Turbochargers: SBOM may show different structure level turbo part numbers that may not be salable.
However, SBOM should show the turbocharger kit.

6. Supersessions: SBOM should show the superseding p/n.

a) Note: In some cases, the SBOM may not be caught up to the latest supersession if the supersession has
happened within the last month (QSOL has a month end close update process). Always check current
sales status and availability.
7. SBOM Parts List: QSOL and SBOM displays the ‘as built’ part number records from the original
manufacturing plant. QSOL/SBOM will also display New Engine Conversion/upfit parts if all processes were
followed by the upfit location to document these changes.
a) Any alterations by the customers or through a Cummins campaign/TRP will not show as updated parts in
the SBOM list.
8. Deviations from original part number shown:
a) Any deviation for use of a part number listed in a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) or in Service Parts
Notes will still apply and must be followed for proper usage.
b) In some cases, the SBOM may pick up two different part numbers for one description. In those cases, the
p/n should be validated through the parts catalog in QSOL, the actual p/n from the component, or from
any service deviation documentation. If questions arise, contact your local Cummins provider.

9. Gaskets missing: If a particular gasket is missing, check to see if the engine uses FIP (Formed in
Place) gasket material. The service manual should list the appropriate gasket sealant.

Sales Status Codes

Most commonly used sales status codes:

 70 – Salable with no restrictions.
 71 – Manually allocated. Customer must call customer care rep.
 74 – Non Cummins supplied. Look for service note for direction on how part is supplied.
 77 – Superseded. Look for superseding PN.
 78 – Obsolete with no supersession.
 80 – Multiple replacement or service with lower level components. Look for service note for
direction on replacement parts.
 82 – Pending code for new part. Part is not yet active.
 84 – Production Only. Part is sold in higher level assembly or kit.
 85 – Munitions controlled item. Part is on U.S. munitions list.
 87 – Pending code for a new part that is superseding another part. Part is not yet active.
 91 – Salable code for a service tool.

Sales Status Code 84 Helpful Notes
A SSC 84 part is used in a higher level assembly or kit. The higher assemblies will have the same noun name in many
cases and will appear on the report (examples…Threaded Plug, Crankshaft, Air Compressor, Male Union, Thermostat).
There is the possibility that not all of the kits are on the report. It may be necessary to do a where-used in IMS for the SSC
84 part to find the appropriate kit.

Sales Status Code 80 Helpful Notes

Similar logic applies to parts with SSC 80. The SSC 80 means that the lower level components of an assembly
should be purchased or there is a multiple replacement. Many times there are parts with the same noun name
visible on the report (examples… Aftertreatment Device, ECM, Flywheel Housing, Tubes). If a part is status
code 80 because there is a multiple replacement, the service notes will have instructions for the replacement.
