Tot Tracker: Preventing

Hot Car Fatalities Among

Infants
Alison Stefansic
Background
• According to CNN, 37 infants die a year due to heat related vehicle deaths
• Over the course of 5 years, 185 infants will pass away
• Since 1998, there have been over 600 reported cases of infant hot car deaths
• As stated by NBC, a child’s body temperature rises 5 times quicker than an adults
Literature Review
• Diamond D.M. (2016)- used Prospective and Habit memory to link memory loss
of children in vehicles
• Furgberg R.D. (2016)- self tracking and monitoring of wearable-tracking devices
to ensure accuracy
• United States Environmental Protection Agency (2016)- due to climate change,
extreme heat events are projected to become more frequent and dangerous, CDC
prevention manual
Experimental Design
• Research Question-
Will this product be useful to society and this generation’s parents? Can this
product change the risk of hot car deaths when using it? Will the product work
safely and perform its functions properly for the user?
• Hypotheses-
If I program a BBC micro:bit to act as an alarm on the driver’s side of a vehicle and
notify the individual whenever the door is opened or closed then it will reduce the
risk of hot car fatalities among infants and animals.
If the BBC micro:bit is stable then it will not set off the alarm when the car is in
action.
