Sexually Transmitted
Infection (STI)

By: XYZA MAE G. LAGULA, RN

BACTERIAL
STD’S
CHANCROID
Chancroid- caused by a type of bacteria called Haemophilus ducreyi.
-always spread through sexual contact
-higher risk: circumcised men

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Open genital sores, pus, painful, swollen glands in the groin.
In women- painful urination, painful intercourse, rectal bleeding, or
unusual vaginal discharge

TREATMENT: antibiotics
CHLAMYDIA

Chlamydia is a disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia

trachomatis. Chlamydia can also infect the eye, or throat.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Abdominal pain, discharges, fever, swollen or tender testicles, swelling around
the anus, pain or burning while urinating. Can infect the eyes and throat as well.

TREATMENT: antibiotics
GONORRHEA (‘THE CLAP’)
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The
infection can be spread by contact with the mouth, vagina, penis, or
anus.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Abdominal pain, bleeding between periods, fever, painful intercourse,
painful urination, pus-like discharge, throwing-up, swelling or tenderness
of the vulva, anal itching, painful bowel movements. Sometimes itching
or soreness in the throat

TREATMENT: Antibiotics
SYPHILIS
Syphilis - sexually transmitted infection (STI)
-caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
-often been called ‘the great imitator’ because so many of the signs and symptoms are
indistinguishable from those of other diseases.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

 Primary Stage — painless sore, wet ulcer or chancre. Chancres can appear on the genitals, in
the vagina, on the cervix, lips, mouth, breasts, or anus. Swollen glands may also occur during
the primary phase.
 Secondary Stage —Body rashes that last 2–6 weeks —palms of the hands and the soles of the
feet. Other symptoms-mild fever, fatigue, sore throat, hair loss, weight loss, swollen glands,
headache, and muscle pains.
 Late Stage — (if not treated) suffer serious damage to the nervous system, heart, brain, or
other organs, and death may result.

TREATMENT: Antibiotics
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's) caused by
PROTOZOA/PARASITES
1) TRICHOMINIASIS (a.k.a. “Trich”)
- It is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF TRICHOMONIASIS

Pain when passing urine
• Pain during sex
• Heavy, unpleasant smelling greenish, yellow discharge
• Lower abdominal pain
• Vaginal redness or itchiness
2) SCABIES - caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, a mite
which lays its eggs under the surface of your skin and
reproduces.
SPREAD through:
> direct skin-to-skin contact (non-sexual and
sexual)
> sexual activity
> contact with towels underclothing or bedding of
an infected person.
• COMMON SYMPTOMS
 Skin rashes are generally found in the skin folds
including: genitals or bottom, knees, waistline, hands,
wrists, and between your fingers.

• TREATMENT
Anti-scabies lotions; washing all bed linen, towels and
clothing in hot water and dry them well; avoid skin-to-
skin contact with your sexual partner/s until treatment is
completed.
3) PUBIC LICE (CRABS) - are small parasites
that attach to the skin and hair near your genitals. They
feed on your blood.
• COMMON SYMPTOMS
 Intense itching, redenss and inflammation
• SPREAD through: sexual contact; other kinds of close,
personal contact; using an infected person's clothes, towels,
or bed.

• TREATMENT - use an over-the-counter lotion or anti-lice

shampoo.

• PREVENTION
 Sexual contact should be avoided until all have been
examined, and treated as necessary.
 Do not share clothing, bedding, and towel used by an
infected person.
FUNGAL INFECTIONS

An Overview
Candidiasis
Caused by members of the genus Candida (Candida
albicans).
Oropharyngeal Candidiasis

Risk factors
• DM
• HIV
• Malignancy
• Steroid use
• Antibiotics
Vaginal candidiasis caused by C. albicans.
Chorioretinitis

Candida endophthalmitis is often associated with candidemia. Lesions are often

localized near the macula and patients complain of cloudy vision.
Viruses
Causing Sexually Transmitted Disease
HUMAN
PAPILLOMAVIRUS
- most common sexually transmitted
infection (STI)

- asymptomatic while others can cause

genital warts or various cancers.
Symptoms and
Complication
• Genital warts – small bumps or clusters of small
bumps in one or many across the area.
- even a shape of a cauliflower

• Cancers – especially cervical cancer

Women: Vulva or Vaginal Cancer
Men: Penile Cancer
Both: Oropharyngeal cancer
Prevention and Treatment
- Treatment: self- limiting

- No to unprotected sexual contact and multiple

sex partner

- Immunization series available to help prevent

certain strains of cancer: Cervarix (for females
only) and Gardasil (for males and females).
HERPES
• Herpes is virus with multiple strains;
two strains HSV-1 and HSV-2,
cause oral and genital herpes

• It infect the skin and/or mucous membranes

-flu-like symptoms
Initial Symptoms: -Fever
-Swollen lymph nodes
-Body aches.
Symptoms Based on Strain
HSV-1
- cold sores or fever blisters on or near the mouth
called oral herpes
Symptoms Based on Strain
HSV-2
- results in sores or lesions on the
genitals, anus or upper thighs. A
case of either HSV-1 or HSV-2 is
called genital herpes
HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS

• Virus that attacks the immune system,

weakening the body’s defense against infection
and creating a vulnerability to disease.

• Untreated HIV can develop into Acquired

Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), at which
point the infection becomes very serious and life-
threatening.
Symptoms
HEPATITIS
• Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a contagious infection that affects
the liver but Hepatitis B (HBV) is more commonly spread
sexually than HCV

Signs and Symptoms

ACUTE STAGE:
-Flu like symptoms
-Nausea & Vomiting
-Jaundice
-Dark colored urine
-Gray stool

CHRONIC HEPATITIS
-occur after 1st 6 months
-Chronic infection, liver disease/cirrhosis and cancer
VS
• HIV is a virus that may cause an infection
AIDS
- being infected with HIV can lead to the development of AIDS
• AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a condition or a
syndrome.
-develops when HIV has caused serious damage to the
immune system.

Symptoms of AIDS are related to the infections a person

develops as a result of having a damaged immune system that can’t
fight infections as well. These infections may include tuberculosis,
pneumonia, certain types of cancer, and other infections.
