Benefits and Developmental importance of

skin to skin contact

Abigail Billingsly ISM-2018 Ms.Click

My mentor Francis Toler and Memorial Hermann
My mentor is Frances Toler, she has worked at Memorial
Hermann for over 40 years and that’s where i’m currently
enjoying my year mentoring at. She’s a NICu certified
nurse that helps float as a charge nurse in the NICU and
helps occasionally in labor and delivery. Frances has
been working in the NICU for over 20 years and
absolutely loves it. She not only takes care of a newborn
intensive care patient but she also makes sure the family
is comfortable and up to date with what's new with their
baby and helps regulate visits with the families.

What is ISM?
ISM is a class based on soul independence. We are required
to meet with our mentors about 3 hours a week and complete
a set amount of hours for every grading period. Throughout
the year in ISM we are required to complete weekly logs,
journals and periodical projects to ensure our activeness with
our mentors.

In ISM we also create a website where all these activities are

documented and can be seen at weekly.com
What are the advantages of breastfeeding??
● Some key points I touch throughout my powerpoint are the importance of
touch time with a baby
● The healthy benefits of breastfeeding
● How the development of a baby is handled with breast milk v.s. formula

Not only do I talk about these points but I also give a little statistical insight on the
importance on breastfeeding and how many people nationwide, and globally
breastfeed
Why i chose this topic and career of study ?
I chose this topic solely because i've always been curious on why a certain
amount of mother’s choose to breastfeed rather than feed their newborn formula. I
was also curious on if this method led to any health delays or developmental
delays.

I chose to follow my mentor in the NICU also because i have always had interest
in the hospital setting but more intriguingly in the Labor and Delivery unit. So when
i had the opportunity to follow frances i was very thankful to be give such a great
opportunity to be apart of the NICU crew with my mentor for the year 2017-2018
Current event :Transgender’s evolution in parenting
● A woman, who was once a man strived to become the
best woman she could. A transgender woman, the first
documented one was said to had tried so hard she was
able to breastfeed her first child. Yes, a hardworking
woman worked hard and after many hormonal pills and
stimulants was able to breastfeed her child all for that
connection of skin to skin contact and to have a direct
connection with her child.

● Is breastfeeding that important ? If people globally are trying to convert

themselves and manipulate their own bodies for this amazing experience,
maybe take a second look before jumping into formula.

● “he took it with increasing doses of the hormones estrogen, progesterone and
spironolactone. At the same time, she began to use a breast pump to
stimulate her breasts.” This was only the beginning of what this woman did to
begin her amazing journey into becoming a mother.
Touch time and sensory development
● Breastfeeding has proven to prevent less colds, respiratory influenza and other
breathing related infections
● Breast milk contain important antibodies necessary for a babies new body that kill
of germs.
● While a mother performs breastfeed over the span of the 6 months a babies facial
muscles grow tremendously
● Breastfeeding ensures that a mom and baby have that connection of chest to
chest every day
● No formula can accommodate and compare to the exact components to breast
milk

● Pointer to give to poor suckling is to position them differently and try and new way
● When a baby is breastfeeding they use suction to press the nipple up on their
palate and squeeze milk out
● " Difficulties often occur because a baby does not take the breast into his or her
mouth properly, and so cannot suckle effectively."
● Every 100ml of breast milk of has 3.5g of fat and 7g of lactose

My product is a powtoon presentation of a short story
including information on benefits of breastfeeding and skin-to-

concluding
Concluding this presentation, I have learned about the importance of
breastfeeding along with the traditional value of skin to skin contact to
help a newborn’s development. This year I have learned about not only
the ways of the NICU and Labor and Delivery unit but the importance they
play in a mother’s life and families life.
