LINEAR EQUATIONS

AND INEQUALITIES IN
ONE VARIABLE
EXPRESSION

-an expression may contain

numbers, variables, and
exponents connected by operators
( +, -, •, ÷)

EXAMPLE: 5x + 3
EQUATION

- an expression must contain two

or more expressions connected by
an equal sign.
- it shows that two expressions are
equal.
EXAMPLE: 5x + 3 = 13
INEQUALITY

-an expression must contain two

or more expressions connected by
inequality symbols.
-These are inequality symbol (>, <
, ≥, ≤, ≠)

EXAMPLE: 5x ≥ 15

INTRODUCTION
TO
LINEAR EQUATION IN
ONE VARIABLE
Equation is the statement of equality of two
quantities or expressions.

The two quantities or expression is called

members or sides of an equation.

The variable whose value is to be found is

the unknown.

The value of the unknown which satisfies the

equation is called the solution of the
equation.
The set of all solutions of the equation is
known as the solution set.

A Linear Equation In One Variable

contains a variable raised to the first power
and no variable in the denominator.

The standard form of the linear equation in

one variable is denoted as ax + b = 0 where
a and b are real numbers and a ≠ 0.

EQUALITY PROPERTIES

1. Addition Property of Equality

For every real numbers x, y and z,
x = y is equivalent to x + z = y + z.

2. Multiplication Property of Equality

For every real numbers x, y and z,
x = y is equivalent to xz= yz.
