The Task
● Design a microgrid that satisfies the energy consumption of San Marin High
School
Energy Consumption
● San Marin in 2015 consumed 527,268 kWH
○ Average of 43,969 kWH per month
○ 1446 kWH per day
○ 60 kW an hour
● There is higher usage during day, lower usage during night
Methods of Generation
● Solar panels - Average of 55.65 kWH
○ Trina Solar TSM-265-DC05A.05 (265W) Solar Panel
○ A little over half facing south, balance facing east and west
● Natural gas generator - 325 kWH
○ 325 kW Katolight/GTA19 Cummins Natural or Propane Gas Generator Set
○ Can be used in case of rain or cloudy day
● Maximum total of 380.65 kWH
○ Surplus will be placed in battery
Seasonal Effects
● Autumn: mostly solar panels (70%), little natural gas (30%)
● Winter: little solar panels (30%), mostly natural gas (70%)
● Spring: balance of solar panels (60%) and natural gas (40%)
● Summer: solar panels (100%)
Required Space and Location
● 210 solar panels, 13,503 m^2 (116.2 m x 116.2 m)
● 1 natural gas generator 20.25 m^2 (4.5 m x 4.5 m)
● Battery around 10 m^2 (5 m x 2 m)
● Solar panels placed on gym and mini-gym, generator near mini-gym, and
battery near portables
○ Generator and battery spread out to prevent explosions

Storage and Transport
● Storage:
○ Energy: 3,000 kWH battery (Tesla)

● $8 per wattage for panels
● 210 solar panels, each one capable of 265 W: $445,200
● Natural gas generator: $29,750

● One mile of high-voltage wire: $17,688
● Total: $1,244,337
● Other possible costs could include part maintenance, solar installation, and
excavation for wires
