Introduction….

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is considered a modern

architect, yet his work exhibits a carefully crafted
balance of intricate and complex forms, spaces, and
elements, and reveals a traditionalism rooted in the
cultural heritage and physical environment of
Finland.
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was a finnish architect and designer,
sometimes called the “father of modernism” .
Aalto wished to learn the language of wood fibres
and he believed that there is a positive effect when
our skin comes into contact with natural materials.

Alto come in direct contact with a

natural material , living wood , which
offered him the sensory resistance
and concrete result that the
abstraction he dealt with on his desk
could not provide.
His first effort was a stackable wooden chair invented by korhonen and
improved by aalto. This was the standard chair used for the jyyaskyla defense
corps buildings auditorium . He also designed arm chairs .He also exhibited
was a bedroom suite which included a chair that was the forerunner of all
aalto’s later bentwood furniture, with the seat and backj made of a single
,gentlycurving piece of plywood.
Sofas :
some designed by Aalto :
Some paimio chairs
The design feat of piamio chair – a companion piece,
made entirely of laminated and molded plywood ,
connected with his experiments with wood . Another
step forward was the L-shaped furniture leg fastened
with screws to a horizontal top.
In 1920 Aalto started to experiment with
combination of their own molded plywood seats and
breuer ‘s steel bases . The result was kind of “hybrid
chair” that combined wood and tubular steel as
materials.
Furniture by Artek :

The company’s main task was to supply the international and

domestic markets with aalto’s furniture….the company was
supervise by Aalto until his death.
Aalto called the furniture leg “the little sister of the
column ” as its form gave rise to number of stylistic
variants…..the laminated molded, right- angled l leg
,originated with three leg stool as well as chair with aback rest,
cantilevered chairs and arm chairs…
During the war ,when glue needed for the process was not
available ,Artek developed Aalto ‘s idea of garden tables and
chairs held together by wire…he created prototype
