Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is considered a modern
architect, yet his work exhibits a carefully crafted balance of intricate and complex forms, spaces, and elements, and reveals a traditionalism rooted in the cultural heritage and physical environment of Finland. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was a finnish architect and designer, sometimes called the “father of modernism” . Aalto wished to learn the language of wood fibres and he believed that there is a positive effect when our skin comes into contact with natural materials.
Alto come in direct contact with a
natural material , living wood , which offered him the sensory resistance and concrete result that the abstraction he dealt with on his desk could not provide. His first effort was a stackable wooden chair invented by korhonen and improved by aalto.This was the standard chair used for the jyyaskyla defense corps buildings auditorium . He also designed arm chairs .He also exhibited was a bedroom suite which included a chair that was the forerunner of all aalto’s later bentwood furniture,with the seat and backj made of a single ,gentlycurving piece of plywood. Sofas : some designed by Aalto : Some paimio chairs The design feat of piamio chair – a companion piece, made entirely of laminated and molded plywood , connected with his experiments with wood . Another step forward was the L-shaped furniture leg fastened with screws to a horizontal top. In 1920 Aalto started to experiment with combination of their own molded plywood seats and breuer ‘s steel bases . The company’s main task was to supply the international and
domestic markets with aalto’s furniture….the company was supervise by Aalto until his death. Aalto called the furniture leg “the little sister of the column ” as its form gave rise to number of stylistic variants…..the laminated molded, right- angled l leg ,originated with three leg stool as well as chair with aback rest, cantilevered chairs and arm chairs… During the war ,when glue needed for the process was not available ,Artek developed Aalto ‘s idea of garden tables and chairs held together by wire…he created prototype furnitures using the “Y ” leg , “X ” leg Few more designs
