8-PSK

Digital Communications
ECE 428
8 – PSK
- three bits are encoded, forming tribits and
producing eight different output phases
- n = 3 and M = 8 (23 = 8)
8-PSK Modulator
I Channel – In-phase channel
Q Channel – Quadrature channel
C Channel – Control channel

The I and Q bit determines the polarity of the output analog signal (logic 1 = +V and
logic 0 = −V), whereas C bit determines the magnitude (logic 1 = 1.307 V and logic 0 =
0.541 V)
I-Channel Truth Table

Q-Channel Truth Table

Determine the output phase for the 8-PSK modulator for all of the possible
input bit combinations. Construct the truth table, phasor diagram, and the
constellation diagram.

Bandwidth considerations of 8-PSK
- the bit rate in the I, Q, and C channel is equal
to one-third of the binary input bit rate (fb/3)
- the highest fundamental frequency (fa) in the
I, Q, and C channel is equal to one-sixth the
bit rate of the binary input (fb/6)
- the baud as well as the minimum bandwidth
equals fb/3
- The output wave from the balanced
modulator is:
(sin 2f at )(sin 2fct )
For an 8-PSK modulator with an input data rate (fb) equal to 10
Mbps and a carrier frequency of 70 MHz, determine the
minimum double-sided Nyquist bandwidth and the baud.
