ABSTRACT

 The aim of this work is to improve the power quality for

distributed generation by using Hybrid Filters
 Power quality is the combination of voltage quality and
current quality.
 The electrical power quality is more concerned issue.
 The main problems are stationery and transient distortions
in the line voltage such as harmonics, swells, sags and
voltage asymmetries.
INTRODUCTION OF POWER QUALITY

 The Power quality is a combination of voltage profile

frequency, harmonics and reliability of power supply.

 Power quality is defined as the degree which the power

supply approaches the ideal case of stable, uninterrupted,
zero distortion and disturbances free supply.

 This presentation also deals with serious power quality

problems such as voltage distortion due to current
harmonics, flicker, voltage sag and voltage surge …etc.
 Non linear loads
 Arcing loads
 Switching loads
 Reactive loads
 Atmospheric condition
 Unstable loads
 Neighboring unbalance system
IMPACTS OF POOR POWER QUALITY

The effect of poor power quality problems has serious

implication on the utilities and customers.
 Higher losses in transformers, cables.
 Energy meters will give faulty readings.
 Solid state protective relays may damaged.
 Speed drives may shut down.
 Increases core and cu losses in electrical machines.
 Due to non-sinusoidal waveforms reduction of efficiency
takes place.
SYMPTOMS OF POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS

 Electronic controlled system stops unexpectedly.

 Abnormal failure of electronic systems.
 Transformer will be overheating.
 Power factor will reduces gradually.
 System lose its stability and become uncontrollable.
INTRODUCTION TO HYBRID FILTERS
Hybrid filters are the combination of both active and
passive power filters. They have the advantage of both active
and passive filters. Hybrid power filters are better solution for
power quality improvement.
POWER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
WITH
SERIES ACTIVE AND SHUNT PASSIVE FILTER
NEED OF SERIES APF AND SHUNT PASSIVE FILTER

 Here the series APF provides low impedance (almost zero)

for low frequency components .
 The shunt connected APF provides less impedance for high
frequency components and filters out all higher order
harmonics.
 So this filter configuration is the most beneficial of all others
and has the advantage of reducing both current and voltage
harmonics.
CONTROL STRATEGY

 The series APF should be controlled such that the voltage

injected by it should compensate the harmonics present in
the system and should help in improving the quality of
power.
 Then the actual output voltage of the series connected APF
is controlled using a PI controller such that the actual output
voltage generated is equal to the reference value.
 Using actual and reference values to generate PWM signals
to Active power filter through VSI ,then reduce harmonics in
system by injected voltages .

CONCLUSION

In this project, we have designed controller, series active

and shunt passive filter.

To reduce the harmonics in the system we have designed

hybrid filters which are controlled by using SRF based
control system .

Higher order harmonics are eliminated and total

harmonic distortion calculated and output wave forms are
observed by using MATLAB&SIMULINK.
FUTURE SCOPE

The work done in this project can be further extended and

such new improvements can be found. The feasible options
are-
 To simulate the proposed control strategy with grid faults
and study the behaviour of APF in power quality
improvement
 To implement the control strategy using Artificial
Intelligence (AI) techniques
