IDEA defines EBD as:
“…a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period
of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational
performance:
(A) An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health
factors.
(B) An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers
and teachers.
(C) Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances.
(D) A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression.
(E) A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school
problems.”
Different Disorders that Fall Under EBD

(mania) and lows (depression)
■ Depression
■ Eating Disorders
– Characterized by
abnormal/disturbed eating habits
– Many kinds (anorexia, bulimia,
binge eating)

hallucinations and delusions

STIGMAS
There is a huge stigma surrounding Mental
Illness. Many people think that people with
Mental Illness are faking it, or that they
should just “toughen up.” The huge stigma
surrounding causes those with Mental
Illness to be discriminated against in the
job and housing market, and those with a
Mental Illness are more likely to be
homeless.

Prevalence
