PRINTING PROCESS

 A process for reproducing text and images, typically with

ink on paper using a print press.

6/24/18 ME Dept. SIMAT 3

 GUTTENBERG’S
PRINTING PRESS.

 INVENTED IN 15TH
CENTURY

 USED MOULDS MADE

OF BRASS

HISTORY

 By the end of 1980 technology named FDM and SLS were

introduced.

 First 3d printing technology developed by Charles Hull (1984)

– Stereo lithography

 MIT patented another technology – “3d Printing Technique” in

1993

 Z corp launched a product named “Spectrum Z150” in 2005.

MANUFACTURING TYPES

SUBTRACTIVE ADDITIVE

6/24/18 ME Dept. SIMAT 6

SUBTRACTIVE MANUFACTURING

 Creates a product by removing sections from a block of

material.

 Generates waste through the excess material that is removed.

 Limited design capabilities.

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

 Creates a product through adding materials to the object.

 Adds material layer by layer until printing is finished.

 Allows for complex and intricate designs.

3D PRINTING

 Type of Additive Manufacturing.

 Adds material to an object layer by layer to create the final

product.

 Imagine a near future in which a device connected to your

desktop prints a SOLID OBJECT!!!!!!

 We can have tangible goods and intangible services delivered

over the internet.

DIFFERENT METHODS

 Selective laser sintering (SLS)

 Stereo lithography

 Fused deposition modeling (FDM)

 Laminated object manufacturing (LOM)

6/24/18 ME Dept. SIMAT 10

SLS METHOD

 Selective laser sintering (SLS) - additive manufacturing

technique.

 Uses a high power laser.

 Raw materials used – Plastic,Metals,Ceramics or glass

powders.

STEREOLITHOGRAPHY

 Additive manufacturing process.

 Uses liquid UV-curable photopolymer-Resin.

 Projects a UV laser beam.

FDM

 Fused Deposition Modeling.

 Additive manufacturing technology.

 Used for modeling , prototype , production purposes etc..

LOM

 Laminated Object Manufacturing.

 Raw materials – Plastic or metal laminated sheets.

 Cutting into required shapes using laser beams or knife.

 Successively glued together.

SUCCESS STORIES

• VV

6/24/18 ME Dept. SIMAT 20

SUSTAINABILITY

 Non harmful chemicals used.

 Almost no waste during manufacturing, and does not require

lubricants.

 Can be used to create replacement parts.

6/24/18 ME Dept. SIMAT 21

CHALLENGES

 Misusing the technology by criminals!!

 Creating of illegal products.

6/24/18 ME Dept. SIMAT 22

CONCLUSION

 3d printing technology could revolutionize and reshape the

world.

 Mass production is possible easily.

 Chances of each person becoming a manufacturer.
