CULTURE

With Latvia being located on the

crossroads between Western and
Eastern cultures, and having a history of
tumultuous developments, it is clear
that foreign nations have left significant
footprints in Latvia.
LATVIA IS PROUD OF RICH
HERITAGE OF FOLKLORE AND
FOLK CUSTOMS
A significant part of the modern Latvian lifestyle includes:
- summer solstice holiday Jāņi or “Liigo!”,
- the Latvian Song and Dance Festival,
- a treasure trove of folk songs (dainas),
- mythology,
- traditional dress,
- folk dancing.
- A unique value of Latvia's folklore are
the folk songs called Dainas.
- Nothing like them can be found
anywhere in the world.
- Dainas consist of four lines and it is
not possible to transfer them to
another language.
- They can be lyric and witty,
philosophical and ironic, like
aphorisms bringing the ancient
wisdom through the thousands of
years.

PAGAN TRADITIONS

The pagan traditions which are followed in almost every family or

Then on many hills in Latvia bonfires are made, around which people
sing and party through the shortest night of the year until the dawn
rises.
There are Easter and Christmas – these festivities are celebrated twice,
both as a Christian and as a pagan holiday.
Latvia simultaneously honors Christian and Hebrew traditions, as well
as elements of the German and the Slavic cultures.
