Industrial Safety
Need for Industrial Safety:
An accident free plant enjoys certain benefits like cost,increased productivity ,
legal, moral etc.
• Cost Saving: Two types of costs are incurred by the management .They are
direct and indirect cost. The direct costs are in the form of compensation
payable to the dependents ,if he/she is fatal and medical expenses incurred
in treatment if the accident is non-fatal .If the victim is under ESI the
management is not liable to meet direct costs, and if the victim is uninsured
the entire responsibility should be taken by management.
• Increased Productivity: Employees in safe plans can devote more timeto
improving the quality and quantity of output and spend less time of
worrying about their safety and well-being.
• Moral: Safety is important on humane grounds too.Managers should have
high morale and introduce safety measures in the organisation.
• Legal: There are so many legal reasons for understanding safety measures
in the organisation
• Unsafe Conditions:
The causes of industrial accidents that pertain to unsafe
conditions may include insufficient work place lighting ,excessive
noise ,slippery or unsafe flooring, extreme temperature, inadequate
protection when working with machinery or hazardous
materials,machine malfunction or failure etc.
• Unsafe Acts:
The causes of industrial accidents that pertain to unsafe acts may
include actions or failures to acts which results to injury.
• Miscellaneous Causes:
It may be of two types External and Internal.
External Causes: Natural forces, emission , radiations, abnormal
operation conditions , software failure etc.
Internal Causes: Technical, personal psychological, non-
observance of safety rules, inability of workers,
