Why interested in studying various housing
development patterns ?
Influence of literature:
1. The New politics of urban housing By: Alan Murie & Rowlands; 2008
2. Urban space and the poor By: Prof. E.F.N. Ribeiro & Dr. Renu Khosla; 2006

3. Urban form and social sustainability By: Glen Bramley & Dr.Sinead Power; 2009
4. Urban planning and politics of slum demolition By: Sanchayita Adhikari;2002
5. Social balance and mixed neighborhood By: Barry Goodchild & Ian Cole; 2001
6. Decentralization by Demolition: Public housing, poverty and urban policy
By: Jeff Crump; 2002
7. Homeownership and labour-market behavior By: Jan Rouwendal & Peter Nijkamp

Field observation:
 Why particular types of housing development pattern emerges at a particular
place?
 Why slum & squatter residents resettled in high-density apartments?
 Why poor from important location of the city replaced by higher income groups?
 Why re-densification / re-development proposals emerges with drastic changes?

sustainability
What may be investigated ?
Research question:
 “Different housing pattern emerging at different places
and distinguishing between types and process of
development”

 “What is being built is the product of Coalition of

interest between different agencies”

 “Some of the development have emerged because of a

particular coincidence of the political and producers
interest, rather than as a response to residents or wider
interest of consumer demands” (Alan Murie & Rowlands; 2008)
What may be investigated ?
Some Research Inferences:
 The affordability of the end user suggest the nature of the
development pattern, therefore the poor continue to be marginalized
and segregated based on new form of market ideology of economic
segregation as opposed to political segregation. (Prof. Ambrose A. Adebayo; 2008 )
 In some cases, participants of development were able to meet the
needs and interest of consumer thus attained success.
 In some cases, development was moderated due to local community
demand loose the very purpose for which it was intended for.
 In some cases, compromises made to produce less sustainable
development that failed to attract potential consumers.
 In some cases, development becomes source of many problems
rather than solution for which it was intended for
 (Alan Murie & Rowlands; 2008)
What may be investigated ?
Various Research areas:
 Determinants of development pattern
 Housing politics, Gentrification
 Micro-economics of the projects
 Residents attitude on redevelopment
 Compromises made for Technological and ideological
shortcuts
 Sustainability of such developments/redevelopments
 Impact assessment pre and post redevelopment
 Evaluation of success or failure of specific development
pattern
What may be investigated ?
Research focus:
“Investigating determinants of emerging development
pattern for social housing and its socio-economic impact
on the residents”
-A case of slum redevelopment project under JNNURM

Magnifying area will be decided in due course of time

How to investigate ?
Methodology:
Literature reviews:
1. Empirical study on Social Housing policies, various programmes, and
objectives etc.
2. Various development patterns (outcomes) of existing social housing and
their determinants & residents responses

Case studies of slum redevelopment project under JNNURM (at inner city
& fringes):
3. Programme objectives, intensions, site selection, Micro-economics of
the project & compromises and process of redevelopment through
secondary survey, interviews, etc.
4. Residents response to the redeveloped housing, socio-economic
changes pre and post scenario of redevelopment through primary
survey.
