RIGHTS OF
DISABALED
PERSONS
 Persons with disabilities suffer from discrimination based on
society's prejudice and ignorance. In addition, they often do not
enjoy the same opportunities as other people because of the lack of
access to essential services.
 International human rights law determines that every person has:
 1. The right of equality before law
2. The right to non discrimination
3. The right to equal opportunity
4. The right to independent living
5. The right to full integration
6. The right to security
 Policy regarding disabilities is often dominated by the notion of
"equalization of opportunities", which means that society must
employ its resources in such a way that every individual, including
persons with disabilities, has an equal opportunity to participate in
society.

7/16/2018 1- 29
JUSTICE TO DISABILITY

 Together with other social issues, disability can be thought of in terms

of justice and recognition, both the protection of rights and the
granting of respect and care. Along with other groups from peasants,
workers, and women to homosexuals and the colonized, those with
disabilities have been marginalized, stigmatized, denied equality, and
literally not seen. Because of this shared experience, both the
condition of and the resistance by the disability community can be
explored by applying the familiar vocabulary of democracy, rights,
freedom, and respect. In this investigation it must be remembered
that human identities are multiple: no one is simply a woman, a
Hispanic, or blind. Each person’s identity is formed by several social
identities: class and race, gender and nationality, sexuality and forms
of ability/disability. Further, as white and black women have
racialized experiences of patriarchy, so within the disability
community there is a hierarchy in which those with only physical
impairments have more status and recognition than those with
mental or emotional ones.
