CHORALE LITERATURE

AND TECHNIQUES
Choir
• (also known as a quire, chorale or chorus)
is a musical ensemble of singers.
• A body of singers who perform together as a
group.
• Choirs are often led by a conductor or
choirmaster. Most often choirs consist of four
sections intended to sing in four part harmony
(SATB) Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass.

• Choirs can sing with or without instrumental
accompaniment. Singing without
accompaniment is called a cappella singing
• Choirs may sing without instrumental
accompaniment, with the accompaniment of
a piano or pipe organ, with a small ensemble.
History of Choir
• The origins of choral music are found
in traditional music, as singing in big
groups is extremely widely spread in
traditional cultures (both singing in one
part, or in unison, like in Ancient Greece,
as well as singing in parts, or in harmony,
like in contemporary European choral
music)
A CAPELLA
• A cappella music is specifically group or
solo singing
without instrumental accompaniment, or a
piece intended to be performed in this
way.
CLASSIFICATION OF VOICES
• SOPRANO
• ALTO
• TENOR
• BASS
• Soprano (Female)
- the highest of the four standard singing
voices.

• Alto (Female)
- the lowest female singing voice; contralto.

• Tenor (Male)
- the highest of the ordinary adult male range.

• Bass (Male)
- the lowest adult male singing voice.

Tips for Correct Singing
• Stand tall, relax your shoulders and the back of
your neck, look ahead and smile.
• Sing with relax jaw. Open your mouth
• Focus
• No extra movements.
• Energy/Power
• Vocal Warm-up
Tips in Studying a Song
• Scan the score (time signature, key signature, dynamics
and rhythm/ tempo)
• Listen to the music
• Read the lyrics of the song
• Study the song by lines
• Repetition
• Memorize your part. Listen to the other voices and focus.
• Do not try to skip those lines that needs to polish.
• Record your part after rehearsal so that you can’t forget it.

CHOIR RULES
• Attend rehearsals/ workshops
• Be punctual at all times.
• Discipline yourself
• Remain attentive during rehearsal
• Respect the abilities and knowledge of your conductor
and follow his/her instructions.
• Always be mindful of staying in tune and blending with
other members of your section and the choir in
general.
• Be not envious and jealous of another's talent.
