Title of the Journal

Effects due to Formation of

Cold Joint in Concrete

www.company.com
Introduction

In Sri Lanka, most of the structures are constructed using

concrete.
Hence the quality of the concrete used is very important, and
the quality not only depends on the constituents of the
concrete, but also on the construction practices.
Sometimes due to bad construction practices, unintentional
joints could occur in the concrete structures which could affect
the performance of the structure.
Cold joint would be a good example for the unintentional joint.

Cold joint

The joint which is formed due to the delay in placing the

second concrete layer after passing the initial setting time of
the first concrete layer, is named as " Cold Joint"

Cold joint (cont.)

• This is considered as a weak joint due to poor performance.

• It implies that the reduction in mechanical properties such as
tensile strength, shear strength and durability .

• A weaker joint will also affect the durability as it allows the

penetration of water through joint.

• Initial setting time of the concrete means the time required

for the transformation of concrete from plastic stage to the
solid stage.

Objectives of the study

 To measure the effectiveness of the implemented

computerized system.

 To measure the quality improvements of the library

management activities regarding to the computerized
management system.

 To measure the awareness of the students about the

computerized system. Example - OPAC (Online Public
Access Catalogue, E-Journals).

 Estimate the satisfaction level of students who use the

library.

Significance of the study

 Can identify the deviations or benefits between the

objective of the computerized system and the current
scenario.

 Aware the students about the useful features of the

computerized system.

 Can identify the practical problems to implement the

system successfully and find the solutions to resolve those
problems.
